Jets rule out two starters as Fields sidelined; Brady Cook to back up Tyrod Taylor vs Buccaneers

The New York Jets will be short two more starters for Sunday's road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in addition to quarterback Justin Fields who is sidelined with a concussion. Defensive end Jermaine Johnson has been ruled out with a sprained ankle, while wide receiver Josh Reynolds will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury.

Johnson, returning from a torn Achilles last season, has yet to record a sack in his first two appearances this year. Reynolds has been a usable target when healthy, but he will not be available in Tampa. The Jets will promote undrafted rookie Brady Cook to serve as the QB2 behind Tyrod Taylor, with Fields sidelined.

Glenn spoke about the team’s mood and preparation after an 0-2 start, saying: “Listen, our guys are upbeat. They’re motivated. Here’s what they know: It was Week 2, and the sky’s not falling. As much as we all think it is, as much as all the outside noise, as much as you guys write about that, the sky’s not falling.” The Jets are trying to rebound on the road against a Buccaneers team that has shown early-season resilience in several areas, even as New York looks to stabilize its lineup.

Tight lines for Sunday’s inactives include defensive tackle Jay Tufele (illness) and return specialist Kene Nwangwu (hamstring), both listed out. Safety Tony Adams (hip), cornerback Michael Carter II (shoulder) and linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball (hamstring) are listed as questionable, with Adams limited and the latter two full participants in Friday’s practice. Glenn confirmed that Brady Cook will be elevated to QB2 behind Tyrod Taylor with Fields out, a move aimed at preserving a functional offense while New York navigates multiple missing pieces.

The Jets’ injury and availability picture has them juggling depth across several units. In Johnson’s absence, Michael Clemons could be in line to start opposite Will McDonald IV, with Tyler Baron and Braiden McGregor available in reserve roles on the edge. The team has emphasized a calm, long-term view despite the 0-2 start, stressing that the season remains within reach if they execute and stay healthy.
