Jim Fahnhorst, a former San Francisco 49ers linebacker and member of three Super Bowl-winning teams, has died at age 66, the team announced Thursday. Fahnhorst died Wednesday, according to the family. In seven seasons with the 49ers, he appeared in 82 games, recorded 232 tackles and seven interceptions, and started 39 of those contests.

Fahnhorst was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 1982 NFL Draft but never played a regular-season game for Minnesota. He spent two seasons in the USFL before joining his brother and the 49ers in San Francisco. The Fahnhorst brothers, Keith and Jim, both played college football at Minnesota, where Jim earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 1981.

With the 49ers, Fahnhorst contributed as a versatile linebacker on a defense that helped the franchise win three Super Bowls during his tenure, including an appearance in Super Bowl XXIII. He played a role on special teams and in rotation on the linebacking corps as the team rode a dominant stretch through the 1980s.

In 2018 Fahnhorst told the 49ers' official site that his move to San Francisco during training camp was a no-brainer, reflecting on how choosing the 49ers fit with his goals in the NFL.

The 49ers announced Fahnhorst's passing on Thursday, saying the franchise was deeply saddened by the loss. The team highlighted his contributions to the dynasty era and his connection to the Minnesota Gophers program through his college days. Fahnhorst's brother Keith spent 14 seasons with the 49ers from 1974 to 1987 and died in 2018 at age 66, underscoring a family legacy in the league.
