The San Francisco 49ers confirmed on Wednesday the death of Jim Fahnhorst, a three-time Super Bowl champion who helped anchor the team’s linebacking corps during the 1980s. Fahnhorst died at age 66, the team said in a statement.

A Minnesota native, Fahnhorst appeared in 82 games for the 49ers and was a member of the club’s Super Bowl XIX, XXIII and XXIV championship teams. During his in-NFL career, he contributed as a key member of a defense that supported one of the league’s most storied dynasties.

Fahnhorst played alongside his brother Keith Fahnhorst, who was an offensive lineman for the 49ers from 1974 to 1987 and also died at 66 years old in 2018. The Fahnhorst brothers were part of the 49ers’ dynasty in the 1980s, a period defined by multiple championships and a sustained run of elite performance under the franchise’s legendary leadership.

The 49ers issued a statement expressing sorrow and honoring Fahnhorst’s role with the team: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of former linebacker Jim Fahnhorst. Our thoughts are with his family.” Fahnhorst’s death comes as the NFL reflects on the contributions of players who helped shape the franchise’s championship legacy.

No cause of death has been disclosed. Fahnhorst’s passing marks the loss of a figure who represented a pivotal era in San Francisco football, and his memory is being acknowledged by former teammates and fans who recall the 49ers’ ascent during the 1980s through the early 1990s.
