Joe Burrow exits vs. Jaguars with left toe injury, ruled questionable to return

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow left Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second quarter after suffering what the team described as a left toe injury and was ruled questionable to return.

Burrow was taken to the ground while trying to evade a sack in the second quarter and remained on the turf holding his left foot. Trainers from both teams attended to him before he rose under his own power and limped to the locker room. Jake Browning replaced Burrow at quarterback, and the Bengals trailed the Jaguars 17-10 at halftime on Sept. 14, 2025.

Team officials listed Burrow as questionable to return following the injury. There was no immediate timetable for imaging or further evaluation disclosed by the Bengals. Browns of medical personnel tended to the quarterback on the sideline before he walked off under his own power.

Browning, who entered the game as the backup, took over as Cincinnati attempted to rally. The Bengals opened the season with a win over the Cleveland Browns last week and entered the game aiming to avoid the early-season disruption that could follow a quarterback injury.

Burrow after play, leaving the field

Burrow has battled injuries during his NFL career. He tore the ACL in his right knee midway through his rookie season and missed significant time the following year. He also sustained a wrist injury that sidelined him for the latter half of the 2023 season. Last season he completed a campaign that included 43 touchdown passes and nine interceptions and placed him among early-season MVP candidates, an award that ultimately went to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

A serious ailment to Burrow would represent a major setback for a Bengals team coming off a playoff-less 2024 campaign and hoping to sustain the offensive momentum generated last season. The team made no immediate decision on whether Burrow would undergo further testing such as X-rays or an MRI; the Bengals' medical staff customarily provides updates after postgame evaluations.

The Bengals and the NFL did not immediately provide additional details on the severity of the toe injury. Cincinnati coach and team representatives are expected to address the media after the game and provide updates on Burrow’s status and any planned imaging or treatment. The team’s postseason hopes and offensive game plan hinge on the availability of the franchise quarterback, and any extended absence would likely prompt adjustments to both personnel and strategy.
