Joe Burrow to miss time after toe injury; Jake Browning rallies Bengals as fiancee’s game-day look goes viral

Joe Burrow will be sidelined for an extended period after suffering a toe injury in the Cincinnati Bengals’ Week 2 game, leaving backup quarterback Jake Browning to step in and lead the Bengals to a 31-27 victory while Browning’s fiancee, Stephanie Niles, drew significant social media attention for a racy game-day outfit.

Burrow was knocked down in the second quarter by Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead and was helped off the field. Images taken immediately after the injury were sent to foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The team later disclosed that surgery will be required, and Burrow is expected to be sidelined at least until mid-December. He was seen after the game using a walking boot and crutches.

Thrown into action on short notice, Browning rallied the Bengals despite three interceptions. He threw two touchdown passes and capped the comeback with a 1-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining to seal the 31-27 win. Cincinnati improved to 2-0 on the young season. Coach Zac Taylor said after the victory that he had no additional information at the time; the team has since provided more detail on Burrow’s injury.

Browning is expected to start with Burrow sidelined, and the Bengals have been making calls to free-agent quarterbacks and are expected to add at least one more to the roster. Cincinnati faces a difficult upcoming stretch, with games against the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers over the next four weeks. The organization has faced scrutiny in recent seasons over pass protection and injuries to its starting quarterback; Burrow previously missed time in 2020 with a knee injury and in 2023 with a wrist injury. The Bengals are 6-8 in games without Burrow in his career.

Off the field, Stephanie Niles, who is engaged to Browning, drew widespread attention on social media for her game-day look. In a video posted to her Instagram account, Niles showcased a custom halter-top she said she handmade from a repurposed football jersey, featuring Browning’s No. 6 bejeweled on the front. The top exposed her back and sides and was paired with bright orange leather trousers by streetwear label Von Dutch and a matching tangerine Longchamp mini pouch. Niles styled her hair in an up-do to accentuate the top’s cutaway back.

Niles’s post, shared with her roughly 51,000 followers, had attracted thousands of likes by Monday morning. Social media users reacted with compliments and emojis; one comment read, "THIS IS THE FITTTTT," another said, "Okkkkk love the fit," and a third added, "omg that is SO CUTE!!!! who dey!" Niles co-founded the sustainable swimwear label 7th Street Swim and met Browning while both were students at the University of Washington. The couple, who marked seven years together in May, became engaged in November 2024 when Browning proposed on a Malibu beach. Niles previously drew attention during the 2023 season for another tight-fitting, team-themed ensemble.

The injury to Burrow represents a significant challenge for Cincinnati’s offense and roster planners. Burrow led the team’s offense when healthy, but the Bengals missed the playoffs last season as their defense finished 25th in both points and yardage allowed. With Browning now slated to start and the team seeking additional quarterback depth, Cincinnati’s immediate focus will be on managing Burrow’s recovery and maintaining its early-season momentum.

Browning’s immediate performance under pressure provided a short-term boost, but the longer-term outlook will depend on Burrow’s surgical recovery and the Bengals’ ability to shore up depth and protection around the quarterback position. Niles is expected to remain a visible presence at home games while Browning fills in for the injured starter.
