John Toshack receives hero’s welcome as Xabi Alonso embraces mentor
Liverpool and Wales great, who has battled serious health issues in recent years, was presented with a Real Madrid gold and diamond badge ahead of the club’s clash with Real Sociedad

John Toshack made a rare public appearance on Saturday, receiving a standing ovation and a gold and diamond Real Madrid badge as he was embraced by former player and current manager Xabi Alonso before Real Madrid’s match with Real Sociedad.
The 76-year-old former Liverpool and Wales striker, who has kept a low profile after a serious illness in 2022, was supported on the pitch by family and congratulated by Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay. The badge presented to Toshack recognizes his time in charge of Real Madrid across 386 matches.
Toshack has long been celebrated for both his playing and managerial careers. He made 397 senior appearances as a player for Cardiff City, Liverpool and Swansea, and was part of Liverpool sides that won three English league titles in the 1970s and the European Cup in 1976–77. After leaving Liverpool he moved to Swansea as player-manager and guided the club from the Fourth Division to the First Division by 1981.
As a manager in Spain, Toshack enjoyed several notable successes. He was part of a Copa del Rey-winning Real Sociedad side in 1987, led Real Madrid to the LaLiga title in 1990, and later won the Spanish Supercup with Deportivo in 1995.
Alonso, who has repeatedly credited Toshack as a formative influence on his career, hugged the Wales legend during the presentation. Alonso has said that Toshack changed the direction of his career when, at 19 and on loan in the Spanish second division, Toshack called him back to Real Sociedad and expressed confidence that he could help turn the team’s season around. "I would not have had the success I have had if it was not for John Toshack," Alonso has said.
Toshack’s public appearances have been infrequent since 2022, when he was treated in intensive care in Spain for an aggressive form of pneumonia brought on by Covid. The warm reception on Saturday marked a high-profile return to the spotlight and recognition from supporters and officials alike.
The presentation took place ahead of a high-profile LaLiga fixture between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, and the applause from fans underscored Toshack’s enduring place in the clubs and communities where he played and managed. Family members accompanied him during the ceremony, and club and league representatives joined in acknowledging his contributions to Spanish and British football.
Toshack’s career bridged success on the field as a player and a managerial legacy that influenced a generation of players and coaches in Spain and the United Kingdom. The pre-match honour and embrace from Alonso highlighted both the personal and professional connections that continue to draw respect for Toshack decades after his peak playing days.
