Jose Mourinho poised to return to Benfica and could face Chelsea in two weeks

Jose Mourinho is reportedly on the verge of a sensational return to Benfica, a move that would pit the Portuguese coach against former club Chelsea in the Champions League in around two weeks.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, talks between Benfica and Mourinho, 62, have progressed rapidly and a deal could be completed by the end of Wednesday. Mourinho is a free agent after being dismissed by Fenerbahce following the Turkish side's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Benfica confirmed on Wednesday that Bruno Lage had left his post after a run of mixed results this season. Club president Rui Costa said the decision reflected a desire for change and the need for a coach who can "represent a club of this size" and "bring this team to the required levels." Costa said the club hoped to have a new coach in place for this weekend's Portuguese Cup fixture against Vila das Aves and declined to name candidates at this stage.

Mourinho's return would mark 25 years since his first association with Benfica, when he was given his first managerial role by the club in 2000 and oversaw 11 matches before moving on to Uniao de Leiria and then Porto, where he established himself on the European stage. He later gained international prominence during successful spells with Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

The timing of the reported talks has drawn immediate attention because Benfica are due to meet Chelsea in the Champions League group stage in two weeks, creating the prospect of Mourinho facing one of his former sides soon after any appointment. Benfica's president and club officials have emphasised the need for a coach who can produce immediate results and compete across domestic and European competitions.

Benfica's statement after losing to Qarabag and a disappointing showing against Santa Clara prompted the coaching change, Costa said, adding: "We have had a tough week for all Benfica fans... We haven't compromised anything, we haven't dropped out of any competition, but I believe this is the time for a change." He thanked Lage for his efforts but said the club's ambitions required a different direction.

Mourinho's availability has prompted widespread speculation in Portugal and beyond since his exit from Fenerbahce. The former Chelsea and Porto coach has a long record of domestic league titles and European success, and his potential appointment would be watched closely given Benfica's status as one of Portugal's biggest clubs.

At the time of publication, Benfica had not formally announced the hiring of Mourinho and the club reiterated that no coach had been confirmed. Any appointment would need to be completed in time for the team to prepare for the upcoming cup match and the Champions League fixture against Chelsea.

Negotiations remain ongoing and further announcements are expected from Benfica should the club finalise terms with Mourinho.
