Juan Mata signs for Melbourne Victory after difficult season at Western Sydney
37-year-old World Cup winner joins A-League side seeking regular football and to help 'strengthen football in the country'

Juan Mata has signed for A-League side Melbourne Victory, the club announced on Tuesday, ending a one-season stay at Western Sydney Wanderers in which the 37-year-old former Manchester United and Spain midfielder saw limited playing time.
Mata said he was "excited to be coming to Melbourne and to be part of one of the most respected clubs in the league and playing in front of the incredible members and fans." He added that he was "driven and motivated to help this team win trophies, and to work with the club as part of a longer-term plan to strengthen football in the country."
Mata joined Western Sydney for the 2024 season but was used predominantly as a substitute under manager Alen Stajcic, starting sparingly and scoring once in 23 appearances. The move to Melbourne Victory represents a fresh opportunity for the Spain international to secure more consistent minutes in the A-League.
The midfielder's career includes spells at Chelsea, where he made 82 appearances, and a move to Manchester United in 2014, where he amassed almost 200 appearances across eight seasons. After leaving Old Trafford, Mata had further stints with Galatasaray and Japan's Vissel Kobe before moving to Australia.
Mata's honours include a Copa del Rey, two FA Cups, a UEFA Champions League, two UEFA Europa League titles and the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Spain. His arrival in Melbourne adds an experienced international figure to Victory's squad as the club seeks to compete for domestic silverware and raise the profile of the sport locally.
Melbourne Victory did not immediately disclose the length or financial terms of the contract. The club has regularly sought to blend experienced internationals with domestic talent since its return to prominence in recent seasons.
The signing continues a pattern of high-profile arrivals to the A-League and underscores the league's ongoing pull for established European players in the latter stages of their careers. For Mata, the move follows a season in which he said he aimed to maintain his level and continue contributing at a high standard.
Officials at Melbourne Victory and Mata's representatives declined to provide further comment beyond the club's announcement. The A-League season is underway, and Mata's integration into the Victory squad will be watched closely by supporters and local media as he seeks to make a more prominent on-field impact than he managed at Western Sydney.
