Kerr returns to Chelsea with standing ovation at Kingsmeadow in long-awaited comeback

Sam Kerr made a long-awaited return for Chelsea, coming off the bench in the 69th minute as the champions beat Leicester 1-0 at Kingsmeadow. The Matildas captain had not played at the venue for more than 21 months and had been sidelined for 634 days by a serious knee injury.

Beever-Jones had given Chelsea the lead after seven minutes, finishing neatly after a ricochet off Celeste Boureille. The home crowd roared for Kerr as she entered in the 69th minute, but she couldn't add to the scoring in her first appearance at Kingsmeadow since early 2023.

Chelsea were holding on in the second half as manager Sonia Bompastor made changes, but Kerr’s introduction did little to alter the tempo. Alyssa Thompson, Chelsea's record signing, came on after the break, yet neither she nor Kerr could stretch a solitary goal into a comfortable win. Leicester pressed late, with Emily van Egmond, a Matilda on loan at the visitors, having a late chance to claim an unlikely point. She volleyed a rebound after Rosella Ayane struck the bar but fired over.

The result left Chelsea with a perfect three wins from three and two points clear at the top of the Women's Super League table. Beever-Jones's early strike, her third in three games, was enough to decide a game that lacked the sharp edge seen earlier in the season. In other matches, Manchester United and Arsenal played out a goalless draw, with Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord in starting lineups for the Gunners and Red Devils respectively, keeping Chelsea two points ahead as they chase a seventh consecutive WSL title.

Liverpool's fixture at Aston Villa was postponed, and a minute's silence was observed in the other games of the day for former Reds' and Chelsea manager Matt Beard, who died over the weekend at the age of 47. Katrina Gorry-captained West Ham sit bottom with no points after a 4-1 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion, who rose to sixth in the table.
