Lewis Crocker crowns career with IBF welterweight title after split decision win at Windsor Park

Lewis Crocker became the IBF welterweight world champion on Saturday night after a split-decision victory over Paddy Donovan at Windsor Park, sealing the biggest win of his professional career in front of a partisan Belfast crowd.

Crocker, who entered the fight widely regarded as the underdog following a controversial first meeting earlier this year, landed two of the bout's most telling punches to floor Donovan in the third and fifth rounds and executed a patient, disciplined game plan that blunted the Limerick southpaw's usual momentum. The victory came nearly six months after their first fight ended in Donovan's disqualification for a late blow.

"Nobody gave me a chance in this fight, nobody," Crocker told broadcasters after the bout. "When you write your post tomorrow make sure you write 'Lewis Crocker world champion!'" He later described the moment to BBC Radio 5 Live as life-changing: "You just witnessed a kid who changed his life tonight."

The atmosphere at Northern Ireland's national stadium was electric as Crocker, 28, captured a title on home turf a short walk from his house. He said bringing major championship boxing back to Belfast was a long-held dream and noted the presence of local hero Carl Frampton ringside.

Crocker credited his corner, including trainer Billy Nelson, for the tactical approach that kept him composed and allowed him to counter effectively when Donovan overreached. "I was being patient and making him miss and I'd make him pay eventually," he said, adding praise for Donovan as a "phenomenal fighter."

Crocker twice knocked Donovan down on his way to a split decision win at Windsor Park

Crocker turned professional in 2017 after a successful junior amateur career. Three years later he stopped Louis Greene to win the WBO European welterweight title in Wakefield and defended it twice. A dominant victory over Tyrone McKenna in December 2023 raised his profile and helped secure the high-profile rematch with Donovan.

With the IBF belt around his waist, Crocker immediately looked to the future and called out Conor Benn, who has not fought since his defeat to Chris Eubank Jr in April. "Domestically, it's a huge fight with great styles," he said. Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn also floated potential opponents including Devin Haney, Rolando Romero and Teofimo Lopez, and suggested Croker's new status would make major nights in Belfast viable again.

Hearn said the win had raised the bar for what could be staged in the city: "They've never had a night like that in Belfast with those kind of names coming to Belfast," he said. He added that a domestic clash with Benn would be an easy sell within Matchroom and capable of filling large venues.

Crocker's disciplined performance in Belfast contrasted with the more frenetic first meeting, when post-fight controversy overshadowed the in-ring action. This time, Crocker stuck to a methodical plan, landing decisive counters and avoiding the sustained exchanges that had favoured Donovan in their earlier bout.

Asked what comes next, Crocker said he was just getting started and thanked promoter Eddie Hearn for opportunities that followed the McKenna fight. He said becoming world champion in his hometown was "the best night of my life" and signalled his willingness to take on big names as he looks to establish himself among the welterweight division's elite.

Crocker likes the prospect of facing Conor Benn, who has not fought since suffering the first defeat of his career against Chris Eubank Jr earlier this year

The victory adds Crocker to a growing list of Irish world champions and marks a rare night of championship boxing at Windsor Park. Promoters and fans will now await confirmation of his next opponent as Crocker prepares to defend the title he won on a night that reshaped his career trajectory.
