PHOENIX — The New York Liberty rallied in overtime to defeat the Phoenix Mercury 76-69 on Sunday, overcoming a late-game scoring drought and taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three first-round series.

The Liberty appeared in danger of a collapse after squandering a seven-point lead in the third quarter, scoring only two points over the final 5:04 of that period. Both teams missed opportunities in the closing minutes of regulation, and the game ultimately required overtime to determine a winner.

In the extra period, Natasha Cloud — facing her former team — hit a 3-pointer that helped swing momentum to New York. Breanna Stewart drove for a layup through contact and, after making the ensuing free throw, was removed with 2:07 remaining. A broadcast camera showed Stewart visibly upset on the bench; her immediate status was not available.

The Liberty outscored the Mercury 11-4 in overtime to secure the victory. New York, the defending WNBA champions, leaned on playoff experience down the stretch as the club sealed Game 1 despite the third-quarter lapse.

Natasha Cloud’s late 3 and Stewart’s contested basket were among the decisive plays in a tightly contested matchup. Both teams had chances late in regulation to gain the upper hand but were unable to convert, sending the contest to extra time where New York closed decisively.

The victory gives New York a 1-0 edge in the short series, with Game 2 set to determine who advances. The Liberty entered the postseason saying they were "saving their best basketball for last" and that a healthier roster could maximize the group’s potential; Sunday’s finish reflected that playoff poise despite stretches of offensive struggle.

The Mercury will look to even the series in the next game, while the Liberty will aim to preserve their championship defense and address any lingering concerns about Stewart’s condition ahead of a likely decisive matchup.
