Malcolm Gladwell Says He Was ‘Cowed’ Into Supporting Trans Athletes at MIT Sloan Panel

Malcolm Gladwell said he was "ashamed" of his performance hosting a 2022 panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference that examined the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports, telling a podcast he felt "cowed" by public pressure and the audience reaction.

On Tuesday, the author and podcaster told Ross Tucker on "The Real Science of Sport" that he had privately agreed with Tucker’s position against trans inclusion but failed to voice that agreement during the panel. "I'm ashamed of my performance at that panel because I share your position 100 percent and I was cowed," Gladwell, 62, said on the podcast, adding that he had been "objective in a dishonest way."

Tucker, who also appeared on the MIT Sloan panel and argued against trans inclusion in women’s sports, said many of his statements were met with silence while pro-trans panelists received strong applause. Gladwell recounted Tucker’s observation that while applause had greeted the comments of Dr. Joanna Harper and ESPN writer Katie Barnes, the audience reaction to Tucker was muted. "My suspicion is that 90 percent of the people in the audience were on your side but 5 percent of the audience was willing to admit it," Gladwell told Tucker on the podcast.

Gladwell’s comments revisit a widely reported exchange at the 2022 conference, which hosted scientists, journalists and athletes for a session described at the time as exploring a path forward for inclusion. The panel drew attention for its sharp contrasts in viewpoint and the visible reaction of attendees as panelists debated competitive fairness and medical and ethical considerations.

In the podcast conversation, Gladwell described the tension he felt between maintaining an objective moderator’s stance and privately aligning with arguments questioning whether trans athletes who were assigned male at birth should compete in women’s categories. He characterized his neutrality at the event as misleading, a stance he now regards as regrettable.

The exchange at MIT Sloan, and Gladwell’s subsequent remarks, reflect ongoing public debate over participation policies for transgender athletes, which has animated sports organizations, lawmakers and athletic communities in recent years. Panelists at the 2022 conference presented competing interpretations of scientific research, differing views on competitive equity and varied proposals for policy.

Gladwell’s admission on Tucker’s show adds a personal element to the broader conversation about how public forums and audience reactions shape which perspectives are voiced. The podcast episode included extended discussion between the two men; Tucker has been a frequent commentator on sports science issues related to sex and gender in athletics.

Representatives for Gladwell and the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference did not immediately provide comment. The panel and its aftermath continue to be cited in discussions about how conferences and sports institutions navigate contentious scientific and social questions surrounding transgender participation in sport.
