Malik Nabers and Brian Daboll Clash as Giants Open Season With 21-6 Loss to Commanders

New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers and coach Brian Daboll were involved in a sideline altercation Sunday as the Giants opened the 2025 season with a 21-6 loss at the Washington Commanders.

The argument, which occurred between the first and second quarters, was captured on television and briefly interrupted the sideline routine. Nabers, in his second NFL season, appeared visibly upset while speaking with Daboll. The two later reconciled on the field when Daboll reached to high-five Nabers in the huddle — a gesture the receiver did not return — and Daboll pulled him into a brief embrace before play resumed.

The game marked a disappointing offensive debut for quarterback Russell Wilson with the Giants. Wilson completed 17 of 37 passes for 169 yards and was sacked twice, finishing with a passer rating of 59.3. New York produced just 231 yards of total offense and failed to score a touchdown.

Nabers led the Giants with 71 receiving yards but caught only five of 12 targets. The team’s struggles extended across the offense as the Commanders built and preserved a two-possession lead en route to the final score.

After the game, Daboll expressed confidence in Wilson despite the poor showing. "I have confidence in Russ. We have to do better around ... overall," Daboll told reporters. He declined to expand on the sideline exchange beyond indicating that coaches and players sometimes have heated discussions during games.

The Giants had also considered using rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart during the game, according to sources. Dart, a former Ole Miss starter who impressed during the preseason with 372 passing yards and three touchdowns against the Bills, Jets and Patriots, did not see any regular-season snaps Sunday.

New York’s offense struggled to generate sustained drives, and the inability to convert opportunities into touchdowns proved decisive. Special teams and defense kept the Giants within reach at times, but Washington’s offense produced enough points to secure the division-opening victory.

The loss drops the Giants to 0-1 to open the season. New York will travel to Dallas next week to face the Cowboys in its next matchup.

The sideline exchange between Nabers and Daboll is likely to draw continued attention this week as reporters and fans assess the team’s chemistry after an underwhelming opening performance. The Giants enter their next game with questions about their passing attack and whether the coaching staff will adjust personnel or play-calling to jump-start an offense that produced a single field goal in the season opener.
