Man City beat Manchester United 3-0 as Haaland scores twice; pressure on Ruben Amorim grows

Manchester City beat Manchester United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with Phil Foden opening the scoring and Erling Haaland completing a second-half brace as City moved to a convincing derby victory.

City took the lead in the 18th minute when Jeremy Doku's advance created space for Foden, who nodded a header past Altay Bayindir. The match was settled in the second half as Haaland scored in the 53rd minute, lifting the ball over Bayindir, and doubled his tally in the 68th with a composed finish after running on to a long pass from midfield. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a key stop to deny Bryan Mbeumo and prevent United from mounting a comeback.

City threatened from the first seconds — Haaland had a snapshot wide almost immediately — and dominated large periods of the match. Doku, Foden and Bernardo Silva were prominent in the build-up play that repeatedly exposed United's defensive lines. United's goalkeeper, Bayindir, was caught in uncomfortable moments, including when a backpass bounced awkwardly off his shin and when a routine ball to him was contested by Noussair Mazraoui before being hacked clear. A misdirected pass out of defence by Matthijs de Ligt also handed City possession in dangerous areas.

United manager Ruben Amorim made several selection decisions that drew attention after the game. New signing Senne Lammens, brought in during the transfer window from Royal Antwerp, remained on the bench, while Bayindir started. The result leaves United with four points from their opening four Premier League games and sitting in 14th place after a run of inconsistent displays.

In a column for the Daily Mail, Oliver Holt described the performance as further evidence of United's broader problems, saying the match underlined "chaotic" features within the squad and suggesting Amorim's position had become precarious. Fans at the Etihad were heard directing chants toward the United bench during the game.

City manager Pep Guardiola made his usual attacking calls, and his side's pressing forced repeated turnovers from United in midfield. Donnarumma, starting in goal after his summer move from Paris Saint-Germain, made a crucial save from Mbeumo's late first-half volley that might have changed the tone for the visitors. After that stop, City sustained pressure that culminated in Haaland's two strikes.

United's best second-half moment came from a lively run by Kobbie Mainoo, introduced from the bench, but the visitors were unable to convert chances. Mbeumo and Casemiro both spurned opportunities that might have reduced the deficit late on.

The result ended a brief run of league setbacks for City and provided a statement win against their local rivals. For United, the defeat intensified scrutiny over defensive errors, selection choices and the absence of a consistent leadership presence on the pitch. United finished 15th in the Premier League last season and have yet to find continuity under Amorim this term.

City's starting lineup included Donnarumma, Sergio Gómez (O'Reilly listed in some reports), Gvardiol, Dias, Khusanov, Rodri, Doku, Foden, Reijnders, Bernardo Silva and Haaland. United's XI included Bayindir, Luke Shaw, De Ligt, Yoro, Dorgu, Bruno Fernandes (captain), Ugarte, Mazraoui, Diallo, Mbeumo and Šeško. Both benches featured several recent signings and named substitutes who did not enter the match.

The victory leaves Manchester City looking more assertive after earlier league setbacks, while Manchester United face mounting questions about personnel, preparation and tactical coherence as they seek their first win in the league under Amorim.
