Manuel Akanji says Pep Guardiola told City's centre-backs only two would play before loan to Inter

Manuel Akanji said Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola made clear to the club's group of centre-backs that only two would start regularly this season, a message the Swiss international revealed prompted his late‑window loan move to Inter Milan.

Akanji, 30, told reporters at a Switzerland national team press conference on Friday that Guardiola told six central defenders that "two would play and two would be on the bench. And that it would be difficult for the rest." He added: "That wasn't nice to hear, because I always expect to be on the pitch." Asked why Guardiola had moved him down the pecking order, Akanji said: "You'll have to ask him."

The defender completed a season‑long loan to Inter Milan late in the transfer window after three years at the Etihad. Akanji joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, established himself as a regular, and was part of a City side that won seven trophies during his time at the club, including the 2023 treble. He made 40 appearances for City last season.

City announced the loan move earlier in the week, with Akanji joining the Serie A side for the 2025–26 campaign. The Switzerland international framed the decision as a response to limited prospects for consistent playing time under Guardiola's assessment of the centre‑back group.

Akanji's comments provide the most direct public account yet from a City player about Guardiola's message to his defensive options this summer. Guardiola has regularly rotated his squad across competitions, and City's depth in defensive positions contributed to a competitive environment for starting places.

Inter will look to integrate Akanji into their back line as they balance domestic and European commitments. Akanji's international involvement continues immediately: his remarks came while he was with Switzerland ahead of upcoming fixtures, as the national team prepares for UEFA Nations League and qualifying fixtures.

The loan transfer closes a chapter for Akanji at Manchester City, where he was a consistent contributor, and opens a new spell in Serie A. Both clubs and the player will monitor his playing time and form at Inter as the season unfolds.
