Maresca's furious half-time talk fuels Chelsea's comeback against Lincoln City

Enzo Maresca delivered a furious half-time message as Chelsea trailed Lincoln City 1-0 in a Carabao Cup tie, with the manager insisting his players needed to match the hosts’ intensity. Lincoln had taken the lead through Rob Street after a first half defined by physical duels and Chelsea’s difficulty adapting to a League One–style challenge. Maresca had walked the dressing room, asking each player whether they had faced a League One side before, aiming to prime them for a different kind of game.

Maresca said, "We expected long balls, duels, throw-ins, free-kicks, every time inside the box," noting the plan had anticipated a different style from Lincoln. "I asked today how many of them had played against a League One team, because you need to play a different kind of game. It's not the same game, because the desire is double from them. We struggled in the first half. In the second-half we were much better." Maresca also added: "Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely."

Chelsea turned things around in the second half with Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte scoring to complete the comeback, after Maresca's half-time admonition. Maresca defended goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who stood in for the suspended Robert Sanchez, after a first-half display that saw Lincoln pepper the box with crosses and throws. "This kind of game, you have to play in a different way. It's more about desire, and we struggled in the first half. If the next game in the Carabao Cup is against a League One or League Two team away, for sure this experience will be good for the next one. We need this experience. We need it.""

Maresca noted the challenge of Lincoln’s approach, which included crowds inside the box and an effort to create chaos around the Chelsea goal. He added: "I don't know how many balls they put inside the box, throw-ins, free-kicks, crosses, so it would not have been easy for any goalkeeper, to be honest." He also recalled Chelsea’s late concession to Brentford in added time from a throw-in as a reminder that such games can hinge on small margins.

Looking ahead, Chelsea will take the experience gained from facing a League One side into their next cup test, with Maresca stressing the value of grit and clinical adaptation when facing unfamiliar environments. The manager underscored that second-half resilience can inform future foldings in the competition, particularly when the opposition structure emphasizes direct play and boxed-in chaos around the goal. The victory advances Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, and the team will prepare for another away assignment against a lower-league opponent, hoping the lessons from Lincoln City carry through to a tougher test later in the tournament.
