Matt LaFleur berates Kingsley Enagbare after sideline confusion in Packers' win over Commanders

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur was seen angrily confronting defensive lineman Kingsley Enagbare on the sidelines in the first quarter of Thursday night's game against the Washington Commanders after a breakdown in communication led to a stalled play and a turnover on downs.

Television coverage of the game showed LaFleur yelling at Enagbare after the defensive lineman appeared to misunderstand the play call. Amazon Prime Video analyst Kirk Herbstreit said Enagbare believed the Packers were preparing to kick a field goal from the Commanders' 33-yard line; instead, Green Bay elected to go for it on fourth down. The confusion briefly halted the offense as an official stood over the ball, and the sequence contributed to the Packers turning the ball over on downs early in the game.

The confrontation came during a game in which Green Bay ultimately controlled much of the first half. Quarterback Jordan Love connected with wide receiver Romeo Doubs on a touchdown that capped a seven-play, 96-yard drive in the first quarter. Running back Josh Jacobs later finished a 10-play, 92-yard drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown that put the Packers ahead 14-0 in the second quarter.

Washington got on the board with a 51-yard field goal by Matt Gay, but the Commanders struggled to sustain drives against the Packers. Green Bay had 13 first downs at halftime compared with Washington's four. The Packers were 3-for-6 on third-down plays while the Commanders were 2-of-7.

Kingsley Enagbare during the game

Enagbare, a fifth-round pick out of South Carolina, is in his fourth season with Green Bay. He recorded three tackles in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions and has been part of the rotation on the defensive line. The broadcast replay showed the sideline exchange but did not indicate any immediate disciplinary action.

Jordan Love was active in the pocket and on the move during the first half, at one point running for a first down that helped sustain a Packers drive. Green Bay's early offensive success and a misfired Washington attack left the Packers with a 14-3 lead at the break.

The sideline incident highlighted communication issues that can surface in a fast-paced environment where teams must quickly decide between kicking and attempting to convert on fourth down. Broadcasters on the telecast called attention to the misunderstanding, but no official explanation was provided by the Packers immediately after the game.

Green Bay's early offensive output and defensive suppression of Washington's passing game set the tone for the first half. The teams returned to the field with Green Bay leading 14-3.
