Matt LaFleur Erupts at Kingsley Enagbare After Sideline Miscommunication in Packers' 'TNF' Win

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur was seen angrily confronting defensive lineman Kingsley Enagbare on the sideline Thursday night after a pre-snap confusion slowed the offense and contributed to a turnover on downs early in the team’s 27-18 win over the Washington Commanders.

The sequence began after a 16-yard completion on third-and-19 to running back Chris Brooks, which gave the Packers a fourth-and-3 from the Commanders’ 33-yard line on the game's opening possession. Broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit said on the Amazon Prime telecast that Enagbare appeared to think Green Bay would attempt a field goal, while LaFleur wanted to quickly go for it. Enagbare ran onto the field, prompting officials to stand over the ball — a pause that likely allowed Washington to substitute — and Green Bay’s fourth-down pass to Romeo Doubs fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs.

The Packers recovered from the early miscue with two long touchdown drives — both covering about 90 yards — before halftime and maintained control the rest of the game. Green Bay kept the Commanders out of the end zone until Washington mounted two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, but the Packers’ defense and timely offense were enough to secure the victory at Lambeau Field.

LaFleur addressed the incident and the team's overall performance after the game, calling out miscues and missed opportunities while praising the defense’s energy. “There was a lot of mistakes out there we have to clean up between penalties, some miscues, some missed opps,” he said. “But you have to give credit to Washington, that’s a good football team. I thought overall I was impressed with the defense, the energy they are playing with, getting pressure on a really good quarterback.”

Micah Parsons during the game

The arrival of Micah Parsons has fortified Green Bay’s front, and Parsons registered a half-sack and three quarterback hits on Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. Green Bay’s pass rush and defensive play helped limit Washington’s scoring chances through the first three quarters, allowing the Packers to build a multi-score lead before late-game pressure from Washington tightened the final score.

Offensively, LaFleur said the unit alternated between productive drives and quick three-and-outs. The coach noted there were opportunities the offense did not capitalize on, whether due to play-calling, execution or situational lapses. The failed fourth-and-3 attempt early in the game became a focal point for LaFleur’s frustration on the sideline and a teaching moment he said he would press in meetings.

Still, the victory continued a strong start to the season for Green Bay, which had already posted notable wins over the Detroit Lions and the Commanders at Lambeau Field. LaFleur described the early results as encouraging but cautioned that the season is long and that the team must continue to clean up errors. “I think it’s great but it’s just a start,” he said. “There’s a long season ahead of us, you can’t take it for granted. You have to keep competing, pushing.”

LaFleur said the episode would give him “a lot of ammo” when he meets with the players on Monday and expressed confidence in the locker room’s character. He added that while the team would be hard on itself, there are clear areas — penalties, situational awareness and finishing drives — that must improve if Green Bay hopes to sustain its early success and reach its season goals.
