Mayfield's Final Drive Lifts Buccaneers Past Texans, 20-19
Quarterback engineered an 11-play, 80-yard march highlighted by a 4th-and-10 scramble and a late touchdown run by Richaad White; Tampa Bay improves to 2-0.

Baker Mayfield engineered an 11-play, 80-yard final drive that ended with Richaad White's 2-yard touchdown to give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a 20-19 road win over the Houston Texans on Sept. 15 at NRG Stadium.
Facing 4th-and-10 from his own 32, Mayfield avoided heavy pressure and scrambled 15 yards to convert, keeping the decisive possession alive. Two plays later he hit running back Bucky Irving for a 22-yard gain that moved the Buccaneers into scoring position, and White finished the march with the go-ahead plunge.
Mayfield completed 25 of 38 passes for 215 yards and two touchdown passes, and also rushed for 33 yards. He absorbed four sacks and several heavy hits while directing the comeback that kept Tampa Bay unbeaten through two games. The Texans did not get another offensive snap despite six seconds remaining on the clock after White's score.
Tampa Bay's scoring began in the first quarter when Mayfield connected with Ryan Miller on a 20-yard touchdown. In the second quarter the quarterback found rookie Emeka Egbuka for a 15-yard score, giving the Buccaneers a 14-10 halftime lead. Houston closed the gap late in the fourth when veteran running back Nick Chubb took a handoff and broke a 25-yard run for a touchdown with 2:10 left to put the Texans ahead.

Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud finished 13 of 24 for 207 yards and a touchdown pass to Nico Collins. Houston's offense moved the ball at times but failed to sustain the drive needed to answer Mayfield's late march. The Texans' defense allowed the final scoring drive to reach the end zone and fell to 0-2 on the season.
Mayfield was hit hard on several scrambles and had a brief confrontation with Texans defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson during the contest. He was nevertheless instrumental both through the air and with his legs in the game-clinching series.

Chubb's touchdown was his first rushing score since Nov. 21, 2024. The Buccaneers' victory improved Tampa Bay to 2-0, marking the fifth consecutive season the team has opened 2-0. The win provided early-season momentum for a Tampa Bay squad that relied on its veteran quarterback to navigate pressure and produce in late-game situations.
Tampa Bay's defense applied consistent pressure on Stroud at times but could not prevent Houston from taking the lead late. The Buccaneers' special teams and clock management on the final possession ensured the Texans had no opportunity for a final answer after White's touchdown.
The Buccaneers will carry the 2-0 start into their next game as they look to sustain early success, while the Texans will seek their first win of the season in the coming weeks.
