Mets’ Tylor Megill Shut Down Again, Likely Out for Remainder of Season

The New York Mets have likely lost right-hander Tylor Megill for the remainder of the season after he was shut down again following a setback during his rehabilitation, the team said Monday.

Megill experienced tightness in his throwing arm while working on his secondary pitches during a rehab outing Sunday and was sent to New York for another MRI. The right-hander has been rehabbing an elbow sprain that first surfaced after a June start; an earlier MRI at that time showed inflammation in the elbow.

Manager Carlos Mendoza stopped short of declaring Megill finished for the year and said the club would await the new imaging before discussing next steps, including whether surgery might be necessary. "The fact that he’s getting another MRI and where we’re at," Mendoza said before the Mets began a series at Citizens Bank Park, "feels like we’re running out of time."

Megill, 28, made six rehab starts between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse with mixed results. On Aug. 17 he struck out nine batters in 3 1/3 one-hit innings, but in another appearance he allowed five runs in just over two innings and felt the recent discomfort that prompted the shutdown.

The Mets had planned to possibly return Megill in a relief role rather than as a starter, believing his velocity and stuff could play up in shorter stints. With six starters currently in the rotation and Kodai Senga recently optioned but potentially available, New York had not planned to reinstate Megill as a member of the starting five.

Through 14 big-league starts this season, Megill posted a 3.95 ERA. The club will rely on the forthcoming MRI to determine whether Megill’s season is over and to assess any longer-term treatment. The Mets did not announce a timetable for the test results or for any medical decisions that might follow.

The setback adds to New York’s bullpen and roster planning challenges as the club navigates the final weeks of the regular season. The organization said it would provide updates after the MRI. The team’s remaining schedule and playoff considerations make the timing of Megill’s diagnosis and potential recovery plan significant for roster construction down the stretch.
