Mets weigh placing catcher Luis Torrens on injured list as Hayden Senger is summoned

The New York Mets summoned catcher Hayden Senger to the major-league roster Monday as Luis Torrens dealt with a right-arm issue that could land him on the injured list.

Senger joined the club at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia because Torrens was nursing the arm injury, team officials said. As of early Monday afternoon, the Mets had not decided whether Torrens would be placed on the injured list.

Torrens, regarded for the strength of his throwing arm, had been struck in the right arm several days earlier and was unavailable Sunday in Cincinnati. The absence left the Mets short-handed behind the plate and prompted the club to bring Senger to the majors as depth.

Francisco Alvarez, meanwhile, continued his return from a right-thumb ulnar collateral ligament sprain and a fractured left pinkie and remained active for the Mets. Alvarez’s comeback has allowed the Mets to rely on him for regular duties, but the club has been managing catching workload across its roster.

The move to summon Senger provides immediate insurance if Torrens requires a stint on the injured list. A formal IL placement would free a 40-man roster spot for Senger; the Mets did not announce any corresponding roster transactions Monday.

Senger’s call to the majors came ahead of the Mets’ game in Philadelphia. The club will evaluate Torrens over the coming days to determine the length and timing of any absence. Manager and team medical staff assessments will guide any roster moves the organization decides to make.

The Mets have not provided a timetable for Torrens’s potential return. The team’s immediate priority is to stabilize catching depth while monitoring his response to treatment and any further imaging or medical evaluation. Further roster announcements are expected if the club formally places Torrens on the injured list.
