Mike Vrabel on Monday publicly left the door open for Bill Belichick to maintain ties with the New England Patriots, downplaying recent comments from the North Carolina coach that suggested Patriots personnel were not welcome on the Tar Heels’ campus.

Belichick, in his first public remarks after multiple reports about UNC’s policy toward New England scouts, said after Saturday’s 20-3 victory over Charlotte, “It’s clear I’m not welcome there around their facility and so they’re not welcome at ours.” Appearing on "The Greg Hill Show" on WEEI, Vrabel referenced Belichick’s visit to Gillette Stadium last June for Tom Brady’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction and said he would take that as a sign of welcome back.

“I guess [Belichick’s] welcome back based on the fact that he was there, so I’ll just go by that,” Vrabel said. “Since his departure as a head coach here, he’s been back, and I’ll leave it at that.” Vrabel’s remarks came amid growing attention to Belichick’s comments and a broader narrative of a strained relationship between the longtime Patriots coach and the organization since his departure in January 2024.

Belichick led New England for 24 seasons and guided the franchise to six Super Bowl titles before leaving the NFL and taking the North Carolina job. ESPN reported tensions between Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft after his exit, and a person familiar with the matter told the network that Belichick’s public statement was meant to convey he felt he was not being shown proper respect, not that he had been physically barred from UNC facilities.

Kraft, who presided over a June ceremony at Gillette Stadium honoring Brady, told WBZ-TV last week he hoped to honor Belichick in a similar fashion when the coach’s career concludes. “When Bill’s coaching career ends, we look forward to sitting down with him and having a statue made to be right next to Tommy,” Kraft said, signaling continued goodwill from ownership despite reports of friction.

Belichick earned his first win as a college head coach in Saturday’s game, when North Carolina defeated Charlotte 20-3. The coach’s terse comment about not being welcome at UNC has drawn attention because of his long association with the Patriots and the high-profile departures that followed his move to college football.

Vrabel did not elaborate on whether the Patriots would seek to pursue a formal response to Belichick’s remarks, instead choosing to note Belichick’s recent presence at team events and leaving further interpretation to others. The exchange highlights the lingering connections between Belichick and the Patriots organization as he begins a new chapter at North Carolina and underlines how gestures and statements by prominent figures continue to reverberate in NFL circles.
