Monchi to be axed as Aston Villa's transfer chief after worst start to season in 28 years

Aston Villa are set to part ways with Monchi, the club's head of football operations, after the worst start to a season in 28 years. The decision would end the tenure of Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, the Spaniard known as Monchi, a longtime ally of manager Unai Emery who helped Villa reach the Champions League in 2024 and advance to the quarter-finals last season.

Monchi's time at Villa has produced a mixed record in the transfer market. The club has sold players for about £130 million, including Jhon Duran, Jacob Ramsey and Jaden Philogene, but has spent heavily on Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Donyell Malen, three players who have yet to establish themselves as regulars in the first team. This summer's window was constrained by UEFA spending rules, which allowed two permanent signings—Evann Guessand and Marco Bizot—with Victor Lindelof joining on a free, bringing the outlay to around £30 million.

The wage bill has also risen since Villa inherited high-paid players Emery did not rate highly, such as Philippe Coutinho, Leander Dendoncker and Diego Carlos. Monchi, 57, remains a respected figure in La Liga thanks to his two spells as Sevilla's sporting director, a tenure in which the club won 10 major trophies, and he continues to return to Spain when Villa's schedule allows.

Emery's side will seek their first win of the season when they travel to Bologna in the Europa League on Thursday, a fixture that could provide momentum as Villa reassesses its recruitment strategy and wage structure ahead of the next window.

The development comes as Villa navigates a challenging start to the campaign, with leadership under pressure to translate market activity into consistent on-pitch success after qualifying for European competition in 2024 and reaching the knockout stages last season. The club will be looking to stabilize its recruitment model while complying with financial constraints and maintaining competitiveness under Emery.
