Napoli's De Bruyne-McTominay axis tests Manchester City in Champions League clash

Napoli will travel to the Etihad Stadium on Thursday for a Champions League clash with Manchester City, with Kevin De Bruyne back in Manchester for the first time since leaving City. The 34-year-old midfielder, who did not renew his City contract after a trophy-filled decade, has found a productive home in Antonio Conte’s Napoli project and helped the Serie A club win their opening three league matches to sit atop the table.

De Bruyne’s return to Manchester comes with a familiar rival-turned-teammate in Scott McTominay. The Scotland international joined Napoli last year for about £25.7 million and quickly became a fan favorite, celebrated for his energy and versatility. McTominay's first season in Naples saw him emerge as a key contributor and the club’s top-scoring midfielder with a dozen goals; he was officially named the league MVP. He also produced a highlight-reel overhead kick against Cagliari that helped propel Napoli toward the title race.

Conte has built Napoli’s midfield around running power and directness, asking McTominay to play closer to the opposition goal at times. The Italian manager has further strengthened the squad with defenders Luca Marianucci, Miguel Gutierrez and Sam Beukema, plus Noa Lang to add attacking options, while Rasmus Hojlund joined on loan from Manchester United with an obligation to buy. In contrast to last season’s departures, Napoli retained most of their title-winning core, even after Victor Osimhen was sold to Galatasaray for about £65 million and Giacomo Raspadori moved to Atletico Madrid for £19 million.

Napoli were listed as 28-1 outsiders to win the tournament, ranking as ninth favorites, a line that could shift quickly if De Bruyne and McTominay continue to influence Conte’s midfield. In a group that also includes PSV, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Chelsea, Napoli’s form and tactical setup make them a potential dark horse in a packed field.

Back in Naples, McTominay has become a local icon, his face appearing on banners and in bakeries, and fans have embraced his blend of grit and flair. He’s learned the language, celebrated with the city’s supporters, and earned nicknames ranging from McTerminator to MacGyver, underscoring how quickly a player can become part of a club’s identity.

As kickoff approaches, City will have to prepare for a dual threat from De Bruyne and McTominay, while Napoli aim to translate domestic momentum into Champions League success. The Thursday night match adds another chapter to a season that has already redefined two former rivals as allies on a single midfield canvas.
