Nets begin camp with historic rookie quintet as rebuild enters new phase

The Brooklyn Nets opened training camp Thursday with a historic group of first-round rookies, the largest such cohort in NBA history. It was a unique opportunity for us, to be quite frank," GM Sean Marks said earlier this offseason. "We’ve never had five picks in one draft. To be able to draft all of them in a draft class we just saw, that was unique. That was something we want to take advantage of, especially in our build, where we see these young men fitting into our group and into our roster."

Thursday's practice will mark the first live session for the group with the Nets, as coaches begin the process of evaluating which players are ready to contribute early and which will require more development. The plan, team officials have indicated, is to blend the rookies with veterans in a measured way while using an accelerated development track in the early weeks of camp.

The historic draft haul is part of Brooklyn's broader rebuild under Marks. No team in NBA history has built its roster around five first-round picks in a single year, and the Nets are counting on the group to provide depth and upside for multiple seasons. The five rookies will compete for roles in a rotation that could take shape during the preseason.
