Nick Woltemade scores on debut as Newcastle beat Wolves 1-0

Nick Woltemade scored on his Newcastle debut to secure a 1-0 Premier League victory over Wolves at St James' Park on Saturday, the club's £69 million signing providing the decisive moment with a 29th-minute header.

Jacob Murphy delivered the cross from the right and Woltemade, 23, won the battle in the six-yard box to steer a firm header to the far post for what proved to be the only goal. The finish was his lone clear opportunity of the game but ended a run of matches without a goal for Newcastle.

Manager Eddie Howe greeted Woltemade warmly at full time and cautioned that the new signing is not a direct replacement for Alexander Isak. Howe said Isak remained "irreplaceable" in style but praised Woltemade's contribution and indicated the forward could need time to sustain that level for a full 90 minutes; Woltemade asked to be substituted in the 65th minute with his legs feeling heavy and was replaced by Osula.

Woltemade's style contrasted with Isak's: he offered fewer runs in behind and less raw pace, instead operating with close control, feints and positional intelligence to create space. He out-thought and out-fought Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou to reach Murphy's cross and applied a composed finish.

Wolves began the match strongly and created several early openings. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope made two saves inside a minute from Rodrigo Gomes and Hwang Hee-chan that kept the home side level during a tense opening half-hour. After the goal, Newcastle managed the game and held out to claim three points.

The victory was Newcastle's first this season in which they both scored and finished with 11 players on the pitch; the club's earlier goals in a 3-2 defeat by Liverpool had come when they were reduced to 10 men. The win also ended a run of matches that had yielded only two points from the opening three fixtures, offering a boost to confidence around the squad.

Howe's starting lineup featured Pope in goal, Kieran Trippier at right back, Fabian Schär and Dan Burn in central defence, and Tino Livramento at left back. Sandro Tonali and Joelinton started in midfield alongside Bruno Guimarães, with Anthony Gordon and Adam Armstrong nominally in wide roles. Substitutions included Willock for Joelinton at 65 and Anthony Elanga later in the second half.

Wolves, managed by Vito Pereira, named José Sá in goal and produced a lineup that included Hwang and Rodrigo Gomes as attacking outlets; several Wolves substitutions came in the second half as they searched for an equaliser but could not find one.

Referee C. Kavanagh oversaw the match, which was attended by 52,145 spectators. The result gives Newcastle momentum as they prepare for their next fixture, while Woltemade's debut offers a first glimpse of the striker the club invested in heavily during the summer transfer window.
