Nick Woltemade scores on Newcastle debut as Magpies beat Wolves 1-0
Club-record signing nets 29th-minute header at St James' Park and is substituted after 65 minutes amid positive reception

Nick Woltemade marked his Newcastle United debut with the winning goal as the Magpies beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at St James' Park on Sunday.
The 23-year-old, a club-record signing from the Bundesliga for £69 million, nodded home Jacob Murphy’s cross in the 29th minute, outmuscling Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou at the far post. Woltemade was substituted on 65 minutes after indicating he needed to come off and received a warm embrace from manager Eddie Howe at full time.
Howe, who said earlier this summer that former striker Alexander Isak was "irreplaceable," described Woltemade’s performance as encouraging. The manager noted the forward may require time to complete 90 minutes at Premier League tempo, but welcomed the composure he showed in the build-up to the goal and his movement in the box.
Newcastle’s victory ended a run that had yielded just two points from their opening three league matches. The win also represented the first time this season the side had scored with 11 men on the pitch; their two goals in the previous defeat to Liverpool came while they were down to 10 men.
Wolves began the brighter side and created several early opportunities. Rodrigo Gomes and Hwang Hee-chan combined to force two saves from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope inside a 60-second spell, keeping the match level until Woltemade’s header. Wolves goalkeeper Johnstone also made a number of stops to keep his team in the contest, but could not prevent the lone goal.
Woltemade’s goal was the 29th-minute product of a right-sided delivery from Murphy. The finish was firm, and observers noted the German forward’s positional intelligence and close control in the crowded six-yard box. He asked to be withdrawn with around 25 minutes remaining, and Howe said the club will manage his minutes as he adapts to life in the Premier League.
Newcastle started in a 4-3-3 formation with Pope in goal; Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schär, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento across the back; Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton in midfield; and Murphy, Woltemade and Anthony Gordon/Harvey Barnes (Barnes started, replaced later) in attack. Substitutes used included Willock, Osula and Elanga.
Wolves lined up in a 3-5-2 with Johnstone in goal; a back three of Mosquera, Agbadou and T Gomes; wing and midfield contributors including Rúben Neves and Krejčí; and attackers Arokodare and Hwang. Manager Vítor Pereira made multiple changes in the second half in search of an equaliser.
Attendance at St James' Park was 52,145. Referee C. Kavanagh issued a standard match-day officiating performance and did not influence the scoring incident.
The result provided a timely boost for Newcastle after a summer of change in the squad. Woltemade, who joined with expectations that accompany a club-record fee, delivered a decisive contribution in his first start and earned praise from teammates and supporters. Howe cautioned that continuity will be needed before declaring Woltemade a long-term solution up front, but said the goal and the manner of the performance were positive signs.
Wolves remain without a league win in the early fixtures and will look to regroup ahead of their next matches. Newcastle will aim to build on the victory when they return to Premier League action, seeking greater minutes and consistency from their new signing as the season progresses.
