Norrie secures opening point as Britain take 1-0 lead over Poland in Davis Cup

Cameron Norrie held off a late scare to give Great Britain a 1-0 lead over Poland in their Davis Cup World Group 1 tie on Friday in Gdynia.

The world No. 34 beat 19-year-old Tomasz Berkieta, ranked 545th, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 after saving set points in a nervy first-set tie-break and breaking early in the second to close out the match.

Norrie, playing his first Davis Cup match since the 2023 quarter-final with Serbia owing to a torn biceps and subsequent illness, weathered a fast start from Berkieta. The Pole twice threatened an early break and pushed the set into a tie-break, where Norrie saved two set points and regrouped after missing three of his own before sealing the opener 11-9. In the second set, Berkieta’s level dropped and Norrie converted an early break to wrap up victory.

The win hands Britain the opening point in a tie that will decide which nation advances to February’s first round of the Davis Cup, keeping alive a chance to contest the 2026 title. The overall winners of the two-day meeting will join the elite draw next year; the losers face a February play-off that could result in relegation to World Group 2.

British captain Leon Smith’s squad will hand a Davis Cup debut to Arthur Fery, ranked 227, in the second singles rubber against Poland’s Olaf Pieczkowski, who is ranked 484, after Jacob Fearnley withdrew with a rib injury. Britain’s doubles for Saturday will feature the world’s top-ranked pair, Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash, making their tie debut, to be followed by two reverse singles.

Jack Draper, Britain’s world No. 7, is unavailable for the tie after an arm injury that has ended his season. Poland are also without their top two singles players, Hubert Hurkacz and Kamil Majchrzak, leaving Pieczkowski as their highest-ranked entrant and contributing to pre-tie expectations that favoured Britain.

Norrie, who has played 22 tournaments this year, said representing his country remains important. "Playing for my country is one of my favourite weeks of the year," he said.

Britain must win the tie to maintain its place among the Davis Cup elite following a 3-2 defeat to Japan in the first round earlier this year. The tie in Gdynia continues on Saturday with the doubles and remaining singles rubbers determining which nation advances.

Poland will look to respond with home support, while Britain aims to consolidate its narrow advantage and secure passage to February’s first-round draw.
