Norris Brands Verstappen an 'Idiot' After Chaotic Start to Italian Grand Prix; Hulkenberg Retires Before Race

Lando Norris confronted Max Verstappen after a chaotic opening lap at the Italian Grand Prix, branding the Red Bull driver an "idiot" following a move that put Norris briefly into the grass early in the race.

Verstappen cut across the track ahead of Norris and McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri on the opening tour. Audio from the cockpit captured Norris saying, "What's this idiot doing? Come on. He's put me in the grass and then he's just cut the corner." Race control instructed Verstappen to give the position back to Norris, who reclaimed the lead down the front straight.

The incident followed a qualifying session in which Verstappen had secured pole position and set a new record for the fastest lap in Formula One — 1 minute, 18.792 seconds. Piastri entered the weekend leading the championship with 309 points, Norris sat second on 275, and Verstappen third on 205.

The early-race drama was compounded by a pre-start withdrawal as Nico Hülkenberg retired after the formation lap. The Sauber driver had qualified 12th but was unable to take his grid slot due to a technical issue, according to team communications.

Verstappen's move drew immediate reaction over team radio and from rivals on track. Race control's instruction for Verstappen to return the position to Norris was implemented on the front straight, allowing Norris to resume the lead in the first laps. Team and driver stewards will review on-track incidents under the usual post-race procedures.

Norris's outburst echoed the tension among front-runners at a Grand Prix weekend marked by close margins in qualifying and an aggressive opening phase. The sequence did not result in a reported collision, but it did briefly unsettle the running order and raised questions about racing lines and defensive moves into the first corners.

Hülkenberg's withdrawal was confirmed by Sauber after the formation lap when the team said a technical problem prevented their car from taking the start. The retirement reduced the field before the first racing lap and will be recorded as a DNS (did not start) for the German driver.

Teams and drivers will receive any formal notices from the stewards after the race as part of the standard review of on-track conduct. The results of the Italian Grand Prix will affect the championship standings as the season progresses, with Piastri, Norris and Verstappen separated by the existing points gaps going into the race.
