Norris misses opportunity in chaotic qualifying at Baku
Wind, rain and a record six red flags redraw the grid; Verstappen on pole, Norris seventh; McLaren pursue Constructors’ title as Ferrari struggle.

Max Verstappen will start from pole for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a chaotic qualifying session at the Baku street circuit, where wind, rain and the venue’s unforgiving layout produced a record six red flags—the most in Formula 1 history. Carlos Sainz qualified second, Liam Lawson third, Kimi Antonelli fourth, George Russell fifth and Yuki Tsunoda sixth, with Lando Norris set for seventh and Oscar Piastri further back.
The session unfolded in dramatic fashion as crashes repeatedly interrupted the action. Williams driver Alex Albon got the ball rolling when he hit the Turn One wall early in Q2, an incident Norris described as a 'rookie mistake' caused by shifting grip in gusting wind. Norris noted that wind could alter grip dramatically on a corner-by-corner basis. The sequence then continued with Nico Hülkenberg and Franco Colapinto both hitting the wall at Turn Four, the Argentine’s incident occurring even as Pierre Gasly was already in the escape road. The corner—made more treacherous by a tailwind that intensified braking zones—was described by Norris as among the worst he has driven, highlighting how the conditions could lurch from controllable to dangerous in a single lap. Oliver Bearman crashed at Turn Two early in the second session, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Alpine’s Oscar Piastri were both pushed wide or into walls in Q3 while carrying too much speed through their corners.
The turning point of the session appeared to be Piastri’s late crash, which left Norris with a potential route to pole. Norris himself acknowledged the pressure of a pole-hopeful lap on a track where margins are minute and the wind can swing moment by moment. He said he still did everything possible on his final run but conceded that going out first in the session—while it offered a clear view of the track on the opening laps—was not advantageous when conditions subsequently deteriorated. 'I went out first and it was the wrong decision to make in the end,' Norris said. 'If everyone else got a yellow behind because someone else went off behind me, you wouldn’t be asking me this question. Sometimes it goes your way around here, sometimes it doesn’t.'
Ferrari endured another difficult day as Leclerc and Hamilton offered differing explanations for their lack of pace. Leclerc suggested the team’s decision to run medium tyres hindered their balance and ability to heat the compounds, saying they could not bring the medium tyres to temperature. Hamilton, who felt the car had potential for pole, lamented Ferrari’s tyre strategy, noting he had used a limited number of soft-tyre runs in Q2 and could not replicate the pace needed to reach Q3. He said the result was not a reflection of his driving but of execution and strategy, and that the issue would be studied internally.
McLaren, meanwhile, head into Sunday’s race with a strong chance to clinch their second consecutive Constructors’ Championship. To seal the title they must outscore Ferrari by nine points and not be outscored by Mercedes by 12 points and Red Bull by 33, a tall but not insurmountable task given their form and the potential shakeups expected from the grid. Verstappen’s imposing pace looms large at the front, with Carlos Sainz on the second row, followed by Lawson, Antonelli, Russell and Tsunoda in the top six. The reshuffled order promises an eventful Sunday as McLaren and Ferrari chase positions while Verstappen attempts to stretch his championship advantage.
McLaren’s Andrea Stella stressed the ongoing challenge posed by Verstappen, emphasizing the need for his team to balance aggression with consistency as the season unfolds. 'Max is a world champion in a fast car, and there will be races where we may not have a clear advantage,' Stella said. 'We will let Lando and Oscar race to pursue the best possible points, while staying mindful of the championship picture as a whole.'
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend continues with Sunday’s race at 12:00 BST, with live coverage and updates available on BBC outlets.
