Nottinghamshire secure trio as Moores signs long-term deal; Bairstow, Bopara and Flintoff family plans among county transfer headlines

Nottinghamshire have received a notable boost to their title bid after head coach Peter Moores signed a new long-term deal, a move that has prompted verbal commitments from key players and unlocked an overseas recruitment option for next season.

Moores, 62, agreed an extended contract at Trent Bridge that, according to the Daily Mail, has led red-ball captain Haseeb Hameed and T20 captain Joe Clarke — both out of contract at the end of this season — to give verbal assurances that they will remain with the club. Jack Haynes has also committed to a three-year extension that runs to the end of the 2028 season.

Nottinghamshire said the new deal for Moores follows a 10-year association with director of cricket Mick Newell and comes after approaches from Hampshire and Lancashire. Moores, who has twice served as England head coach and won trophies at three counties, continues to hold franchise coaching roles overseas, including a recent two-year extension with Melbourne Stars and a batting coach appointment with Deccan Gladiators. Nottinghamshire included a clause in his contract allowing a third franchise placement in an off-season if such an opportunity arises.

The club were also able to re-evaluate plans for Australian seamer Fergus O'Neill after a change in England and Wales Cricket Board endorsement criteria for overseas players. The revised regulations allow clubs to recruit overseas players who have played 20 first-class matches in the previous two years, replacing a previous threshold focused on T20 appearances in ICC-recognised tournaments. O'Neill, 24, who took 133 first-class wickets at an average of about 20, is understood to be invited back for a longer stint in 2026.

Haseeb Hameed and Joe Clarke remain out of contract at the end of the season, and while formal paperwork was still unsigned, the Daily Mail reported verbal agreements had been struck. Club sources had warned that the futures of senior players might be uncertain should Moores depart, given the close working relationships he has developed with Hameed and Clarke.

In other county developments, Jonny Bairstow will hold talks this week with Yorkshire cricket manager Gavin Hamilton and head coach Anthony McGrath to discuss his role at Headingley once his England and Wales Cricket Board contract expires on Oct. 1. The 35-year-old former England batsman, who will turn 36 on Sept. 26, has spent 16 years in Yorkshire’s first team and is effectively a free agent from October.

It is seen as unlikely that Bairstow would move to another county, though the Daily Mail said options include a freelance white-ball role and continuing to represent Yorkshire in T20 competitions. Bairstow’s existing SA20 contract with Sunrisers Eastern Cape predates that franchise’s buyout of the Sunrisers’ Hundred side, which could expand opportunities for him elsewhere in the franchise circuit. The report also noted Mumbai Indians’ interest in Bairstow following his appearance in the 2025 Indian Premier League.

Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman Will Smeed remains under review after reverting to a multi-format contract earlier this year. Smeed, 23, struck 94 in the Vitality Blast final at Edgbaston to help Somerset to a third T20 title and has a contract review scheduled for the end of September. Having previously stepped away from four-day cricket in 2022, Smeed has not yet made a first-class debut despite returning to a multi-format deal and may seek loan opportunities if he pursues red-ball cricket next year.

Jack Blatherwick has re-signed with Lancashire, the Daily Mail reported, while Durham’s addition of all-rounder Paul Coughlin was noted in transfer activity across the counties. The report added that seasoned players Ravi Bopara and Samit Patel, the only two cricketers to have appeared in every English domestic T20 season since its inception in 2003, are intent on extending their careers into a 24th season. Bopara, 40, has hinted at continuing with Northamptonshire and Patel, who turns 41 in November, has begun discussions with clubs after leaving Derbyshire in July.

Andrew Flintoff plans to include his sons Rocky and Corey in the England Lions’ winter tour of Australia in a move described by the Daily Mail as largely developmental. Seventeen-year-old Rocky, on Lancashire’s books, is expected to travel with the main touring party to Perth in early November to continue rehabilitation after a pelvic injury, while 19-year-old Corey, on a two-year rookie contract at Kent, will join the squad in Brisbane nearer Christmas after completing university commitments. Neither is expected to be considered for match selection, the report said.

The Lions will provide warm-up opposition for Ben Stokes’ senior England side, playing a three-day match at Lilac Hill in Perth and two four-day fixtures against a Cricket Australia XI and Australia A that run alongside the first and second Tests. The Lions squad is likely to be skewed towards seam-bowling options, with names mentioned in the report including Hampshire’s Sonny Baker and Eddie Jack, along with Mitch Stanley, who recently took a maiden five-wicket haul.

England’s full and second-string squads for the Australian leg of the winter tour were expected to be named next week, with provision for one or two Lions players to remain in Australia beyond the second Test if required for extra game time.

County cricket officials and player representatives are preparing for a busy close to the season, with contract reviews, transfer negotiations and overseas recruitment shaping squads ahead of the 2026 campaign. Nottinghamshire’s retention of core personnel and the endorsement-rule change for overseas red-ball players are likely to influence how other counties approach recruitment and squad continuity in the coming months.
