Oliver Glasner denies quit claims after Marc Guehi transfer saga, praises captain's professionalism

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has denied reports that he threatened to quit the club amid talks over captain Marc Guehi’s potential transfer to Liverpool, saying the rumours misrepresented conversations with the club’s hierarchy.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Palace’s Premier League trip to Sunderland, the Austrian said he never threatened to leave and recounted a discussion with chairman Steve Parish in which Parish asked whether the team could manage the season if Guehi were sold. "One, I never threatened to leave the club. Never. Two, after many discussions, the chairman asked me ‘do you think we can manage the season if we sell Marc?’" Glasner said, adding that it was "the last time I want to talk about it" and that "the fans deserve to hear about how it really was."

Glasner praised the England international for his attitude throughout the episode and said he was never concerned about Guehi’s commitment to Palace. Reports said Palace had accepted a bid from Liverpool late on deadline day; the move ultimately did not materialise. Glasner described the outcome as "a happy ending," noting that Guehi "stuck to his contract" and that the manager expected him to continue leading the side.

The manager’s comments appeared aimed at quelling suggestions of discord between him and chairman Steve Parish, who has overseen transfers since the departure of Dougie Freedman. Glasner, whose own contract runs until the end of the season, repeatedly defended both the club’s handling of the situation and Guehi’s professionalism.

Palace did complete a deadline-day signing, bringing in France under-21 defender Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse in a deal reported to be worth up to £22.5 million. Glasner warned that the 20-year-old would not be an immediate replacement for Guehi, citing Canvot’s inexperience and saying he would not be thrown straight into the first team.

Glasner also provided an update on several injuries. He said the knocks to Adam Wharton and Ismaila Sarr were not as serious as first feared and expressed hope that both players could return in time for the club’s home fixture against Liverpool in a few weeks. The manager added that striker Eddie Nketiah was also expected to be back around the same time.

The comments come as Palace prepare for Saturday’s league game at Sunderland, with Glasner seeking to shift focus back to on-field performances after a turbulent transfer window. The manager’s denial of reports that he had considered resigning removes a layer of uncertainty surrounding the club’s leadership following the aborted move for Guehi and the late signing of Canvot.
