Orioles top Yankees 4-2 as Rogers shuts them down at Camden Yards

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 4-2 Friday night at Camden Yards, aided by Trevor Rogers’ shutdown start. The left-hander entered with a 1.43 ERA across 16 appearances this season and limited New York to a single hit through six innings. The Orioles’ bullpen closed the door late as Baltimore improved to 73-81 on the year, holding the Yankees to six hits overall.

New York finally broke through in the sixth when Austin Wells led off with a single, the Yankees’ first hit off Rogers. But the damage came earlier in the inning when Baltimore capitalized on a sequence that began with a pair of defensive misplays by New York. Westburg’s broken-bat comebacker appeared to alter its spin and, with a shard of the bat hitting off Will Warren’s leg, rolled through to allow runners to reach, resulting in an error. Gunnar Henderson followed with a high chopper to second that Chisholm charged and attempted to flip to first, but the flip sailed past Goldschmidt. The two miscues helped Baltimore push across two runs in the inning, making it 3-0.

In the top of the seventh, Jazz Chisholm Jr. provided a glimmer of offense for the Yankees with a two-run homer that pulled New York within 3-2. The shot, his 30th of the season, also vaulted him into a select club in franchise history, joining Alfonso Soriano and Bobby Bonds as the only players to reach at least 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a single season.

Baltimore answered in the bottom of the seventh when Henderson lined an RBI double off Tim Hill to extend the lead back to two. New York threatened again in the top of the eighth, putting runners at first and second with one out, but Rico Garcia induced groundouts from Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton to end the rally.

Will Warren, who started for the Yankees, was charged with three runs (one earned) over 5 1/3 innings. The lone earned run against him came in the second inning on Ryan Mountcastle’s 422-foot homer, the strike that briefly trimmed the lead but did not alter the eventual outcome.

With eight games remaining, New York’s standings outside the dugout remained precarious. Toronto’s loss to Kansas City left the Yankees three games back in the AL East, though New York still controlled the top AL wild-card spot, two games clear of the Mariners–Astros loser and at least two ahead of the Red Sox, depending on the Rays’ result later Friday.
