Packers' Jayden Reed out indefinitely after double surgery as Green Bay's hot start continues

Green Bay, Wis.—The Green Bay Packers’ scorching start took a major hit Tuesday when wide receiver Jayden Reed underwent surgery to repair both a broken left clavicle and a Jones fracture in his left foot and was ruled out indefinitely, the team announced. The double procedure was performed Tuesday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported, and Reed later posted on X that the surgery was successful.

Reed, 25, had been playing through the foot issue through training camp before he snapped his clavicle in the first quarter of Green Bay's 27-18 victory over the Washington Commanders at Lambeau Field on Thursday night. After the game, coach Matt LaFleur said Reed would miss a lot of time, and the team would monitor his recovery to determine how fast he could return this season.

Reed previously dislocated the shoulder last season, though he did not require surgery. The injury occurred on what would have been a 39-yard touchdown connection against the Commanders, but a holding penalty negated the play. Reed had led Green Bay in receptions and receiving yards in each of the last two seasons, and he opened Week 1 with three catches for 45 yards and a touchdown against the Detroit Lions.

On Instagram Live after the surgeries, Reed expressed confidence that the Packers can contend for a championship despite his absence. Green Bay (2-0) will next visit the Cleveland Browns (0-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

The absence of Reed will force Green Bay to adjust its receiving corps as the season progresses. The Packers have shown they can win without him, but they will need others to step up to maintain the offense's pace.
