Paraglider nearly brought down after rogue '6' balloon tangles in lines

A 27-year-old motorized paraglider pilot narrowly avoided a crash after a large helium "6" birthday balloon drifted into his flight path and became entangled in his suspension lines, according to the pilot and video posted online.

The pilot, identified only as Michael, captured the incident in a TikTok video that has been viewed more than 4 million times. He told the Daily Dot that he first noticed something drifting in the sky shortly after takeoff and initially mistook it for another pilot or a large bird. As he drew closer, he realized it was a balloon. He attempted to catch it with his feet and the balloon's string wrapped around his risers, the critical lines that connect the wing to the pilot, leaving him about 1,500 feet above the ground with the balloon stuck in his equipment.

Michael told the New York Post that he has been paragliding for six years and has never experienced anything like the balloon entanglement. He said he managed to land safely with the balloon still attached and now keeps it in his living room as a memento. In a lighter aside, he said he painted a small marker on his paramotor commemorating the incident.

The footage drew thousands of comments, many highlighting a broader hazard from released balloons. Michael said farmers responded to his video describing incidents in which helium balloons landed in fields and harmed livestock, underscoring concerns about litter and potential risks to animals and equipment.

While this episode ended without injury, aviation experts and pilots warn that foreign objects can present serious risks to recreational and professional flyers. Parachuting and paragliding incidents involving entanglements, midair collisions or equipment malfunctions have, in other cases, resulted in severe injury or death. In June, a 48-year-old experienced skydiver, Jasmine Black, died in Georgia after a collision with another jumper's canopy during final approach; she attempted to cut away her parachute but was too close to the ground for an emergency canopy to deploy effectively, according to reports.

Recreational flyers routinely emphasize preflight inspections, situational awareness and maintaining separation from other air traffic and loose objects. The viral clip of Michael's incident highlights how commonplace litter such as released balloons can create unexpected hazards in open-air sports and operations that rely on clear airspace and unimpeded equipment.

Michael's account and the video do not indicate any regulatory actions or investigations linked to the incident. He described his typical flights as calm and scenic and said the balloon episode was the most alarming event he has encountered in years of flying. Observers of the video urged greater public caution about releasing helium balloons and called for increased awareness of their environmental and safety impacts.
