Parcells offers new take on Patriots breakup at Hall of Fame ceremony
Former coach says he would have done things differently; Kraft says the relationship has mellowed over time

Bill Parcells offered a surprisingly conciliatory take on his decades-long feud with Patriots owner Robert Kraft during Saturday's Patriots Hall of Fame ceremony, saying he would have done things a little differently in hindsight. The 84-year-old coach, who led the Giants to two Super Bowls before a stint in New England, described the breakup that followed the Patriots' 1997 Super Bowl loss to the Green Bay Packers as a moment he would approach differently, according to ESPN.
At the ceremony, Kraft spoke of how the relationship has evolved. "Over the years, we've both mellowed," Kraft said. "We’ve shared laughs, swapped stories and reflected on the foundation we built together. I want to say, ‘Thank you, Bill. Thank you for the fire. Thank you for the fight. Thank you for the foundation. And thank you for the many contributions you made to this franchise.'"
Parcells has long been a central figure in the club's history over personnel strategy. He has said that he and Kraft were not aligned "in the best interest of building a team" and that the people responsible for roster decisions were, in his view, "incompetent." Those tensions were revisited in the Apple TV+ Dynasty documentary, which, as recently as 2024, explored the rift while noting that the two men have mellowed with time.
Parcells’ on-field résumé includes leading the Giants to two Super Bowl titles before his arrival in Foxborough, a foundation that helped him become one of the coaching game's most storied figures. The Patriots obtained Parcells a year after he became their head coach, and he later moved on to stints with the Jets and Cowboys. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
Kraft described Parcells’ inclusion in this year’s Patriots Hall of Fame class as a long-awaited acknowledgment of his impact on the franchise. Kraft told The Boston Globe in April that Parcells had been a finalist multiple times before finally being selected (in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2020 and 2023), underscoring the reverberations of his tenure in New England.
The ceremony occurred the day before the current Patriots hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers at Gillette Stadium, a reminder of how the club’s past and present intersect as it pursues wins this season.
