Pat McAfee Issues Emotional Tribute and Warning After Charlie Kirk Fatally Shot at Utah Event

Pat McAfee, the former NFL punter and media host, issued an emotional tribute and warned of a national alarm after conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a public event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

In a post on X late Wednesday night, McAfee called Kirk "a name synonymous with having the courage to speak what you believe" and said watching a man "get hunted and slayed in broad daylight because of his opinions" left him "disgusted and devastated." McAfee added, "This can’t be what we actually are or become as a country... I believe that the good people will always outnumber the evil people but damn… today was an alarming day in our country’s history." He offered prayers to Kirk’s family and called on Americans to reckon with the violence.

Kirk, 31, was shot while speaking to a crowd in a tented gazebo on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem. Witness video and university officials showed he was struck by a single bullet that entered his neck; he collapsed at the scene and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Kirk was married to Erika Frantzve; the couple had a three-year-old daughter and a 16-month-old son.

Police and federal authorities said the shot was fired from the roof of the Losee Center, roughly 200 feet from where Kirk stood. Early in the investigation, an elderly man was briefly taken into custody and later released. Officials later said they had detained and subsequently released a person who had been a potential suspect; the FBI said the investigation and a related manhunt were continuing.

The shooting drew immediate condemnation from public figures across politics and sport. McAfee joined other well-known sports personalities in public statements, including former race-car driver Danica Patrick and media figure Dave Portnoy, who called for change in the nation's political discourse and security at public events. Former President Donald Trump posted a tribute on Truth Social, calling Kirk "great" and offering condolences to his family.

Video from the scene showed a chaotic aftermath: spectators screaming and fleeing, bystanders rushing to assist Kirk, and a shadowy figure seen running across the roof of the Losee Center shortly after the gunfire. Utah Valley University officials described the campus response and said university police were cooperating with local and federal authorities in the ongoing probe.

Kirk founded a conservative youth organization and was a prominent and polarizing voice in American politics, routinely drawing large crowds to rallies and events. His killing has intensified debate about safety at public gatherings and the role of political rhetoric ahead of a sustained national investigation. Sports figures and organizations, who regularly intersect with national political conversations and public commentary, called the killing an alarming escalation and urged restraint and a focus on the family Kirk leaves behind.

As investigators continue to seek clear details about the shooting and the identity and motive of the person responsible, McAfee and others urged the public to avoid speculation and to let law enforcement complete their work. The shooting has prompted renewed scrutiny of event security and the protections afforded to public speakers and attendees at rallies and campus events.
