Patrick Mahomes' Mother Posts Support for Charlie Kirk After Assassination

Randi Mahomes, the mother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, reshared a post by conservative commentator Charlie Kirk on X and added the message "Rest in heaven" after Kirk was fatally shot during an event on a Utah college campus.

Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was struck by a single bullet around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem as his event was beginning. Randi Mahomes re-shared a Kirk post dated Sept. 6 that read, "Jesus defeated death so you can live," and added her short message of condolence on the social media platform.

Randi Mahomes is a prominent Christian and conservative voice in sports circles and has publicly supported former President Donald Trump. She has been visible at NFL games and other events, sometimes wearing political apparel. Her post was among several from sports figures expressing sympathy after the shooting; former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, college quarterback Jaxson Dart and former Patriots receiver Julian Edelman were also reported to have offered condolences.

Law enforcement arrested a suspect early Friday morning. Sources identified the suspect as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, a Utah resident. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said at a Friday news conference that a family member of Robinson reached out to a family friend, who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that Robinson had confessed to or implied he had committed the shooting. Officials have not released additional details about a motive.

Kirk had been surrounded by mostly college students when the shooting occurred as his event was getting underway. The incident prompted an immediate law enforcement response and a search in the area. Turning Point USA is a conservative nonprofit organization that operates on college campuses and hosts public speaking events.

The reaction from sports figures followed a wave of public statements and remembrances from political and media personalities. Several athletes and sports commentators used social media to express shock and to offer condolences to Kirk's family and colleagues. Randi Mahomes' brief, faith-centered message echoed the religious themes in the post she reshared.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials have not provided a timeline for any upcoming court proceedings. The arrest announced Friday followed a multi-day search and an influx of tips and leads to local law enforcement agencies.

Coverage of the incident and reactions from the sports world continued to evolve as law enforcement released additional information. Sports figures and organizations monitoring the situation issued statements or social-media posts in the hours after the shooting, reflecting a cross-section of voices connected to college and professional athletics.
