Pete Carroll Smashes Whiteboard in Rousing Raiders Speech Before Week 1 Win
Witnesses say the veteran coach delivered a WWE-style rallying cry — including kicking through a whiteboard — ahead of Las Vegas' 20-13 victory over the Patriots

Las Vegas Raiders coach Pete Carroll kicked through a whiteboard during a motivational team meeting the night before the Raiders’ Week 1 victory over the New England Patriots, according to a report by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The display, described by witnesses as resembling a WWE promo, came at a closed-door gathering the Saturday night before the Raiders’ 20-13 win on Sunday. Players and staff said the room "went crazy," and several people told Rapoport that Carroll’s theatrics were an intentional method of firing up the roster and changing the team’s culture.
Sources said Carroll entered the meeting to the entrance music of WWE wrestler Jey Uso and worked his way through the players before delivering a speech on the need to compete this season. Carroll, who turns 74 on Monday, reportedly began talking about the necessity to "kick in the door" and then proceeded to kick the whiteboard.
"He just knows how to reach guys. This is why he’s who he is," one source told Rapoport. Another added, "That’s just Pete. That’s how he turns the culture around."
Carroll, who spent 14 seasons as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks and won a Super Bowl there, made similarly bold public comments during Raiders training camp. "We are going to win a bunch of games," he said in July. "I mean, what are my expectations? We are going to win a bunch, and I don’t care who hears that." The Raiders followed that tone with a road victory over New England on Sunday.
The team’s Week 2 matchup is set for Monday night in Las Vegas against the Los Angeles Chargers and coach Jim Harbaugh. The Raiders have highlighted the emphasis on competitive intensity and cultural change since Carroll’s arrival, and the whiteboard incident has been cited internally as one example of the coach attempting to instill urgency.
The episode received attention because of Carroll’s age and long coaching résumé; he remains one of the NFL’s most recognizable and colorful figures. League observers and teammates have previously pointed to his motivational methods and energetic approach as key components of his coaching style.
Carroll’s methods will be on display again Monday night as the Raiders seek to build on their opening-game victory. The team has not released further details about the meeting or the whiteboard incident, and Carroll did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
