Peter Crouch turns out as Farnham Town mascot after finishing bottom of fantasy league

Former England striker Peter Crouch made a surprise appearance as the mascot for Southern League Premier Division South side Farnham Town on Saturday, fulfilling a forfeit after finishing bottom of a fantasy football league.

The 44-year-old, who spent a career at clubs including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, wore Farnham Town’s home colours and was led out at the 2,500-capacity Memorial Ground in Surrey ahead of the clash with promotion-chasers Sholing. The stunt was carried out as the result of a season-long fantasy league penalty.

Crouch’s appearance was greeted by applause from the home crowd and was shared on social media by Steve Sidwell, a former Chelsea midfielder and co-host of That Peter Crouch Podcast. Podcast co-host Chris Stark was also at the ground to witness the moment. Sidwell posted several clips that showed Crouch walking out with the club’s matchday goodybag and taking part in the light-hearted pre-match routine.

The event offered a contrast to the striker’s usual matchday entrances; over a long professional career Crouch frequently walked out at some of football’s largest stadia. The mascot role at a non-league match underlined the informal, participatory culture surrounding celebrity podcasts and the rise of fantasy football as a social fixture among former professionals and fans alike.

Farnham Town are competing in the Southern League Premier Division South and drew a notable crowd for a fixture that provided both sporting significance and a viral moment. Sholing, who were described as promotion-chasers, were the visitors for the fixture.

Crouch retired from professional football several years ago and has remained a prominent media figure through his podcast and broadcasting work. The former forward’s willingness to take part in the forfeit was met with amusement on social platforms and highlighted the crossover between grassroots football and the wider game.

Organisers and club officials did not provide additional comment on the arrangement beyond acknowledging it was a pre-arranged penalty for the fantasy competition. The appearance added a headline-grabbing moment to Farnham Town’s matchday and provided supporters with a memorable and unconventional spectacle ahead of the contest.
