Piastri's Azerbaijan Grand Prix nightmare ends with crash, 34-race finish streak halted
World championship leader suffers chaotic start and early exit in Baku as Norris narrows gap

Oscar Piastri, the world championship leader, endured a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku after a troubling qualifying session left him ninth on the starting grid. A jump-start at the start line compromised his race before he could even settle in, and he slid backward through the field before the first corner.
By the time he reached the fifth corner on the tight street circuit, the McLaren driver locked up, slamming into the barriers and bringing his race to an early end. The finish-line setback ended his 34-race streak of finishing races and handed his teammate Lando Norris a significant chance to close the title gap.
Those scenes were captured in images showing Piastri walking the long, lonely route back to the pits in McLaren gear, a moment described by fans as 'the hardest walk of his career.' Piastri later told Sky Sports F1 that his weekend was a 'messy one' with 'simple lapses in judgement' contributing to the result.
After the race, Piastri accepted responsibility for the start and the crash, saying he anticipated the start too much and did not account for the car's dirty air. 'I clearly went into the corner way too hot and that was that,' he said. He added that the weekend's errors were 'silly mistakes' and difficult for the team.
With the championship still in reach but the gap to Norris narrowing to 25 points, Piastri cast the result as a reminder to stay focused, insisting the title is not over and that there is plenty of racing left to determine the standings. 'There’s still a long way to go, and if you have good or bad weekends, the championship is far from over,' he said.
Looking ahead, Norris and McLaren will try to capitalize on the misstep and press the momentum as the title fight resumes at the next race.
