Portuguese Matador Gored Through Back at Bullfight in Toledo, Undergoes Surgery

A 25-year-old Portuguese matador, Joao D'Alva, was seriously injured after being gored through the back and tossed by a bull during a bullfight in Villaseca de la Sagra, in the province of Toledo, Spain. He was treated at the scene and transferred to a regional hospital, where he underwent surgery for wounds to his lumbar region.

Toledo Hospital said D'Alva suffered a goring in the right lumbosacral region near the base of the spine with ruptured paravertebral muscles. The hospital described the wound as measuring about 20 centimetres long and 10 centimetres deep with both entry and exit points. Medical staff performed hemostasis control before he was taken to the University Hospital of Toledo for further surgery and care.

Disturbing video circulating from the 25th Golden Potter competition appeared to show the bull lift D'Alva with its right horn and drop him to the sand. Assistants entered the ring to distract the animal and remove the matador to an on-site infirmary. Local reports said D'Alva was "visibly weakened" and in pain when examined at the arena. Organizers indicated the incident occurred during the first bull-calf of the afternoon.

Local bullfighting outlet Touro e Ouro reported D'Alva is expected to return to the bullring, and the matador posted messages of support and thanks on social media following the injury. Organizers and medical teams at the event provided first aid before his transfer to hospital; there has been no public, detailed update on his condition beyond confirmation of surgery.

The goring comes weeks after a fatal incident involving a Portuguese bullfighter in Lisbon's Campo Pequeno arena. According to reports, within seconds of that show beginning, a bull hoisted the matador, known as Trindade, and rammed him against a wall, causing severe brain injuries from which he later died. Local authorities said a 73-year-old spectator also fell ill during the same event and was taken to hospital, where he subsequently died.

Spain and Portugal have seen a series of serious and sometimes fatal incidents tied to both organized bullfights and public bull-running events in recent years. Last autumn, a man was severely gored in the scrotum during a running-of-the-bulls event in La Vall d'Uixó; emergency personnel and bystander doctors provided immediate care. A 20-year-old man was killed during a bull-running festival in El Casar in Castilla-La Mancha when a bull's horn punctured his chest, and in May of the previous year a 57-year-old man died in hospital seven weeks after being gored twice during a bullfight in Vall d'Uixó. In September 2023, Jose Antonio Subies, a senior executive at the Pamesa ceramics group, died in hospital after being gored at a festival near Valencia; reports said injuries affected his liver and a lung.

Bullfighting remains a culturally significant but controversial tradition in parts of Spain and Portugal, with governing bodies, medical services and event organizers maintaining protocols intended to respond to the frequent injuries that occur during both professional bullfights and public festivities. Authorities in the regions where recent incidents occurred have not announced changes to event schedules or safety protocols linked specifically to D'Alva's injury.

Officials and news outlets are continuing to monitor D'Alva's condition as he recovers from surgery, and further updates are expected from his representatives and the hospitals involved.
