Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique, 55, was taken to hospital for emergency surgery after a cycling accident on Friday that left him with a fractured collarbone, the club said.

Club officials said Enrique was treated by emergency services at the scene before being transferred to hospital and scheduled to undergo an operation. In a statement released on Friday evening, PSG said: "Following a cycling accident on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique was treated by the emergency services and will undergo surgery for a fractured collarbone. The club expresses its full support and wishes him a swift recovery. Further updates will be shared in due course."

The setback comes just over a week before PSG return to domestic and European action after the international break. PSG are scheduled to host Lens in Ligue 1 on Sept. 14 and begin their Champions League title defence away to Atalanta on Sept. 17. It remained unclear on Friday whether Enrique would be fit to take charge for either fixture.

A fractured collarbone typically requires six to eight weeks to heal, depending on the severity of the break and the chosen treatment, which may include surgical fixation as in Enrique's case. The club did not provide further medical details or a timeline for his return.

Enrique, a former Spain national team coach and Barcelona manager, was appointed by PSG amid ambitions to compete for domestic honours and the Champions League. His absence, even if short-term, would leave the club to rely on the coaching staff to prepare the team for a demanding run of matches in league and European competition.

PSG said it would provide further updates in due course. The club did not name the member of the coaching team who would assume matchday duties in Enrique's absence or detail any changes to training plans ahead of next weekend's fixtures.
