Purdy unlikely to play as 49ers gear up for Mac Jones start

San Francisco — Brock Purdy is highly unlikely to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, head coach Kyle Shanahan said, as the 49ers prepare for a divisional showdown described by some as a battle between two undefeated teams. Purdy has been dealing with a toe injury and practiced in a limited capacity this week, but Shanahan indicated the plan is to start Mac Jones in Purdy’s place unless there is a late turnaround. Shanahan added that Purdy has made progress this week and will be re-evaluated on Saturday to determine whether he can be active as Jones’ backup or as an emergency third-string quarterback.

Jones started last week in New Orleans after Purdy missed the Saints game, completing 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in his first start for San Francisco. Purdy played in Week 1, overcoming the toe injury and a left shoulder issue in a 49ers win over Seattle, finishing 26-for-35 for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The quarterback situation adds an early-season twist for a team that has already navigated injuries at several key positions.

The 49ers remain without Purdy for their Week 3 game, with Shanahan saying Purdy has made progress but the decision will hinge on Saturday’s evaluation. Purdy’s toe has lingered since Week 1, when he played through discomfort and a separate left-shoulder issue to help San Francisco edge Seattle. Jones, who took over last week, completed 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in his first start with the club since joining in the offseason.

The injury report also includes star tight end George Kittle, who is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, and wide receiver Jauan Jennings, listed as questionable with an ankle/calf issue. San Francisco has leaned on its defense and the running game to stay competitive, but the absence of Kittle and Jennings would test the depth of a receiving corps that already faces questions at the outset of the season. The 49ers’ plan at quarterback looms large as they prepare to meet Arizona in a divisional clash that the club associates with high stakes early in the year.
