Ralf Rangnick cycles onto pitch as Austria beat Bosnia in World Cup qualifier

Ralf Rangnick surprised supporters and teammates Tuesday night when the Austria coach rode a bicycle across the pitch at the Stadion Bilino Polje in Zenica ahead of his side’s World Cup qualifying match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The 67-year-old, who has been managing Austria since 2022, arrived on two wheels to conduct a pre-match interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF and later cycled again at half-time on his way to the dressing room. He is recovering from ankle surgery and has limited his movement after complications in the summer, telling reporters afterwards that "the walk would have been a bit far otherwise."

Rangnick’s unconventional entrance preceded a match in which Austria moved closer to qualifying for a first World Cup since 1998. Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer scored in a 2-1 victory, while Edin Dzeko briefly levelled for the hosts. The result bolstered Austria’s position in the qualifying group as the team pursues a return to the global tournament.

The coach’s use of a bicycle reflected ongoing caution in his rehabilitation after ankle surgery. In July, Rangnick was forced back into hospital when an initial operation became infected, requiring further treatment and a period of careful rehabilitation. He has since said his recovery is progressing and that he is "taking small steps," while still limiting strain on the ankle.

Rangnick’s spell as Austria coach has included notable results. He guided the team to the last 16 at Euro 2024 after Austria topped a group that included France, the Netherlands and Poland. His record with the national side stands at 21 wins in 37 games.

Before taking the Austria job, Rangnick had a lengthy club career that included coaching spells at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, Schalke, Stuttgart and Hannover. He also served as interim manager at Manchester United for six months, a period described by some observers as turbulent. In 2024 he declined an approach from Bayern Munich.

Tuesday’s appearance in Zenica offered a moment of levity amid a competitive international calendar. Rangnick’s choice to ride rather than hobble drew smiles from some supporters and helped underscore the pragmatic approach he has taken while balancing recovery with the demands of international management.

Austria now look to maintain momentum in the qualifying campaign as they seek to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup. Rangnick and his players will return to continental action with several qualifying matches remaining, each offering points toward that objective.
