Rangers hope 'spectacular' Gavrikov can bring needed new dynamic to blue line
Free-agent defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov is expected to bolster New York's back end after agreeing to join ahead of the upcoming season.

The New York Rangers are counting on Vladislav Gavrikov to deliver a 'spectacular' new dynamic to the team's blue line, a development highlighted by a report from the New York Post. The 29-year-old defenseman signed as a free agent this summer in a move designed to bolster the Rangers' depth and experience on the back end.
Gavrikov is already familiar with several members of the current Rangers roster, including Artemi Panarin and Igor Shesterkin, from prior stops in his hockey career. He first met Shesterkin when they were teenagers playing for Russia on the national team, and Gavrikov skated in front of Shesterkin during the 2014 World Junior Championship. The two later crossed paths at SKA St. Petersburg from 2017 to 2019. Gavrikov and Panarin overlapped for two playoff games in 2018-19 with Columbus, and their wives became friends.
The Rangers view Gavrikov as a versatile addition who can contribute to the defense in multiple roles and help stabilize the group as they prepare for the upcoming season. By adding a veteran presence with experience in high-stakes playoff settings, New York aims to deepen a blue line that has sought greater consistency.
