Ravens blow 22-point lead, Bills win 41-40 as John Harbaugh faces backlash

The Baltimore Ravens surrendered a 22-point fourth-quarter lead Sunday night, allowing the Buffalo Bills to march back for a 41-40 walk-off victory and prompting immediate criticism of coach John Harbaugh’s late-game decisions.

Baltimore led 34-19 entering the fourth quarter but yielded 22 points in the final 15 minutes. With 1:26 remaining and facing a 4th-and-3 from their own 32-yard line, Harbaugh elected to punt rather than attempt a short conversion, handing the ball to Bills quarterback Josh Allen and setting up Matt Prater’s 32-yard field goal as time expired.

The final sequence began after Buffalo failed to convert a two-point try that would have tied the game. Baltimore took over at its 31 and gained six yards on three plays, including a six-yard pass from Lamar Jackson to DeAndre Hopkins. Rather than attempt a play to gain the necessary three yards, the Ravens punted, leaving Allen ample time to lead a five-play drive into field-goal range.

Allen completed a remarkable late surge, finishing the fourth quarter with 16 completions for 251 yards, one touchdown pass and two rushing touchdowns. Buffalo totaled 497 yards for the game, with 269 of those yards coming in the fourth quarter. According to the NFL, the Ravens became the first team in league history to score at least 40 points and rush for at least 235 yards and still lose.

Derrick Henry led Baltimore’s ground attack with 169 rushing yards; he also fumbled earlier in the fourth quarter, a turnover that preceded Buffalo’s go-ahead touchdown. Jackson added 70 rushing yards and threw for the touchdown that had given the Ravens their lead earlier in the game.

The loss extended the sting from Buffalo’s playoff defeat of Baltimore in January and left the Ravens searching for answers as they prepare to host the Cleveland Browns next week. Buffalo will travel to the Meadowlands to face the New York Jets.

Criticism of Harbaugh was swift on social media and from some analysts. Posts on X (formerly Twitter) called the decision to punt with three yards needed inexplicable; one user wrote, “That is without question… the worst loss during the John Harbaugh era in Baltimore.” Former Packers quarterback Kurt Benkert posted that Harbaugh has the most blown double-digit fourth-quarter leads dating back years. Sportswriter Jason La Canfora wrote that the coach should be “on the clock.”

The game continued a troubling historical trend for Harbaugh. Associated Press reporter Josh Dubow noted this was the eighth blown double-digit fourth-quarter lead by Baltimore under Harbaugh in the past ten seasons, the most of any coach in that span.

Defensive lapses in the fourth quarter compounded the late collapse. After surrendering a large lead, the Ravens were unable to stop Allen’s tempo and big plays, and a trip by safety Jaire Alexander on Bills receiver Keon Coleman at the Ravens’ nine-yard line prevented a potential Buffalo touchdown in the final minute. Three Baltimore kneel-downs preceded Prater’s game-winning kick.

The loss deals an early blow to Baltimore’s season outlook and intensifies scrutiny over game management and situational decisions. The Ravens’ coaching staff and players will have six days to address execution and strategy before hosting a division rival in Cleveland, while Buffalo looks to build on the comeback as it heads to New York.
