Reece Walsh on report after headbutt in Brisbane's golden-point win; unsubstantiated reports claim abuse aimed at his daughter

Brisbane Broncos fullback Reece Walsh has been placed on report after a headbutt incident in Sunday's qualifying final against the Canberra Raiders, a match the Broncos won 29-28 with Ben Hunt slotting a 94th-minute field goal in golden point.

Walsh produced a late, match-turning performance — scoring one try, creating another and kicking a 40-20 that helped spark Brisbane's comeback from a 28-12 deficit with about 14 minutes remaining — but his afternoon was marred by a second-half scuffle with Raiders forward Hudson Young that resulted in both players being sin-binned. The incident has been referred to the NRL judiciary and could carry significant sanction depending on the grading.

Unsubstantiated reports emerged on Monday that members of the Canberra crowd directed verbal abuse at Walsh referencing his daughter, a claim first raised by broadcaster Karl Stefanovic. Maroons coach Billy Slater described the reports as "horrendous" and said he had not heard such abuse previously. "When you pay your $20 for a ticket to come into a footy game it doesn't give you the right to abuse people," Slater told Today. "Like seriously, why would you say stuff like that?"

Walsh was seen making an obscene gesture toward the crowd as he left the field for the sin-bin; the gesture could result in a fine, the NRL has traditionally treated such conduct as a financial penalty rather than one that carries further suspension risk. The Broncos have said they will review footage and the incident in due course.

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart criticised the match officials' decision not to send Walsh from the field, saying the pair's actions were clear. "Well, they've set a precedent now, you're allowed to headbutt," Stuart said, adding his view that the official ruling was wrong while praising the game itself for the spectacle it produced.

Broncos coach Maguire said the altercation appeared to be an emotional exchange and indicated the club would assess the matter. "I'd have to have a look at it, they were at each other a little bit," Maguire said. "It was probably more just conversation, we'll have a look at it down the track. There is emotion out there. They were both sent for a reason, so you move on."

The incident is the second time Walsh has faced scrutiny for striking. He received a grade-two striking charge for a separate headbutt during State of Origin in 2023. A grade-two dangerous contact or striking charge in the current case would potentially rule Walsh out of the rest of the season unless he successfully contested the charge at the NRL judiciary. Media reports on Monday suggested the NRL is preparing to fine Walsh rather than suspend him, though no official decision had been announced.

Broncos captain Pat Carrigan was also sin-binned in the match, shortly after Walsh, for a shoulder charge on Morgan Smithies. Carrigan said the players' message to each other was straightforward. "The conversation was pretty clear, it was just let's get out there and have a crack," he said, adding that Walsh had urged the side to keep pushing.

Despite the controversy, Brisbane's comeback was a standout feature of the game, with Walsh's late influence central to the victory. Hunt's field goal in extra time clinched the win, extending Brisbane's run in the finals.

The Broncos also face injury concerns heading into the next stage of the finals. The club expressed hope that prop Payne Haas' left ankle issue is not serious, while there are fears that second-rower Brendan Piakura suffered a depressed cheekbone in the first half and may miss further action depending on medical assessment.

The NRL judiciary will review the headbutt charge and any related conduct, including Walsh's gesture toward spectators, and determine sanctions based on match footage and grade guidelines. The Broncos will await the outcome as they prepare for the next test in their title campaign.
