Reid threatens to kick Kelce in sideline exchange, lip reader says

An on-field exchange between Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and tight end Travis Kelce on Sunday night included what a lip-reading analysis described as an eight-word threat to remove Kelce from the team. The confrontation occurred late in the second quarter of the Chiefs' 22-9 win over the New York Giants after Kelce failed to secure a pass from Patrick Mahomes.

According to Nicola Hickling, the 67-year-old lip reader who reviewed the footage, Reid moved toward Kelce and delivered the threat while bumping his chest. Kelce responded by noting that he had hurt his ankle and would need to see a doctor. At that moment, Kelce had two catches for four yards; he finished the game with four receptions on seven targets for 26 yards.

After the game, Reid downplayed the clash in the postgame news conference, saying that Kelce is a passionate player and that such emotion comes with football. He added that he values the tight end's love of the game and that it's an emotional sport. The incident drew comparisons to a February 2024 moment at the Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, when Kelce bumped his coach in a meltdown that had to be contained by teammates; this time, Reid did not require anyone's help to cool down.

Fans reacted on social media, with some expressing concern that the flare-up signals deeper tensions within the defending champion Chiefs. Comments ranged from fears of a growing rift to doubts about Kansas City's ability to maintain its standard after a strong run in recent seasons.

With the win, Kansas City moved to 1-1 on the season. Kelce's performance, though productive, was below his usual output for a player of his caliber, continuing questions about the offense's early-season form.
