Rex Ryan, the former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills coach turned ESPN analyst, criticized Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel on Monday, calling him "nerd boy" and saying the team looked "soft" after Miami's 33-8 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
The lopsided defeat in Week 1 at Lucas Oil Stadium featured just 211 total yards for the Dolphins and three turnovers. Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, starting for Indianapolis, threw for 272 yards with one touchdown pass and added two rushing touchdowns as Indianapolis capitalized on Miami's mistakes.
"What the hell's he talking about? You know, maybe he's on a different level, McGenius Guy, whatever the hell he is. Nerd boy," Ryan said on ESPN's "Get Up." He added that the Dolphins' roster had talent but lacked passion and respect for its coach, saying, "Their team has no respect for their coach. They play like that. They're soft, I'm with you on that. Every part of their football team. They have tons of talent on this team. They don't play with any passion."
Ryan, who spent more than a decade as an NFL head coach, has often contrasted with McDaniel's quieter, more cerebral public persona. The criticism came a day after Miami's defeat, when analysts and fans questioned how the Dolphins would respond moving forward.
McDaniel addressed questions about his job security and the team's performance in his Monday news conference. "I don't see this job void of pressure," he said. "I don't see entitlement in this job, but I think the most important thing is that I worry about doing my job. I think that's what the team will get from me, for sure." He added a broader perspective on the season, saying, "I think one of 17 is one of 17. And if that type of game doesn't show up ever again, that's the only way you make it worth it. Because otherwise it's just miserable for miserable sake."
Miami's coaching staff and front office will face scrutiny after the Week 1 loss as the Dolphins prepare to host the New England Patriots in Week 2.
